Lost Voice on Garmin 760

All of a sudden I lost the voice portion on the 760 about 3 weeks ago. Checked the Mute and it is okay and checked general settings and they are okay. Any suggestions?

Is there a place where I can listen to voices

Is there a way I can listen to the voices of American voice, Jill voice and Jack voice without downloading them?

Did you unselect

have you tryed to change the voice to another voice and test it first then change it back that would be the first thing to do then check webupdater for any updates that involve voice question

Did you loose sound all together? Did you go into the voice settings and try another voice? I lost voice on my 750 one time, went to the voice settings, and for some odd reason, the voice setting reset itself to none! If you lost sound all together, try your FM transmitter, it may be your speaker! Hope this helped!

This may be a silly question...but what about rebooting the unit and trying aain? Solves 90% of issues.

Me too..lost voice

The same thing happened to me on my 760.... Spent a couple of hours trying to figure it out... stumbled upon the "voice setting", and voila... NOTHING was checked....
I quickly checked American Voice.. and, that SEEMED to fix it... then, I realized I did not have Text To Speech anymore.... long story short.. after more fiddling around... realized you MUST select a TTS voice in order to get TTS ! (duh)

I hope FM Transmitter is not selected by mistake in setup for audio.

To find voice settings on main page looks for tools located at bottom of screen and touch it,then settings and last touch language. You will see settings for voice, keyboard and text.

Voice Setting

Thanks Charlie. That is what I have been doing - I thought I might have missed something. Since I updated the unit (BIG MISTAKE) I only had one voice and not the one I wanted. One of the techs told me to take the voices out and then update again. Did that (more than once) and now I don't even have the Voice Personality bar on the language page - just the keyboard and text...
Really stuck...hoping someone can tell me how to get it back....

So why is everybody hating

So why is everybody hating updating their 760? I updated everything and have no issues....what has everybody been experiencing?

Lost voice

Have you hooked the unit up to your computer and went to my computer and clicked on the Garmin drive? Then looked in the voice folder to see if you have any voices in the folder? You may also want to go to the Garmin web site for your unit and look for updates and download and the one voice you want download and try it instead of using the webupdater.Someone with the same unit could also send you the voice file you need then add it to the folder.

updating

ciocca1 wrote:

The 7x0 software updates v4.0/4.1 created massive lags/stuttering in the TTS spoken directions along with a problem with user-created routes where the first point is deleted after the 6th or 7th point is added. 4.2 corrected (supposedly since I am still on v3.1/3.2 on my 750/760) the stuttering/lag issue but the routing issue still remains.

Garmin also does not allow you to (normally) backdate the unit software to go back to a previous stable version (such as 3.x) if you have problems with a newer version. There -are- ways to do it but on the 760, you will end up permanently disabling Bluetooth if you backdate from 4.x to 3.x. Garmin will need to replace the unit to get Bluetooth back.

Updating to the newest version is not always the best thing to do, especially if your unit is working properly in the first place with your current version.

1Roxylady..............

Did you accidentally delete the voice file folder? If so, just make a new one and reload the voices into the new folder! If you need step by step directions on how to do this, I'll get to that later on or maybe some one else could help you out in the mean time!

RE: voices

Note that they will not work on the 3xx/6xx series. You will also need to have the most recent software update for your unit installed for them to work.

Be sure to read "How to Install Voices" under "quicklinks" on the far right side of the page.

Lost Voice

Thanks Bob G. I would appreciate any assistance for replacing voices.

Voice Personality

Success - I got the voice personality back!! Now I would appreciate if anyone could tell me how to get more than one voice. I only have Jill even though the voices appear in the voices folder. Is there something I'm not doing??

Not that simple. I only have the one voice and then Afrikaans, Cesky etc. No more voices I can understand.
This occurred after I did the update. The voices are on the unit but English_American_Jill.vpm is my only choice.
Can't figure out how to get other selections...may have to try Garmin again....
Thanks for trying....

You can only have one voice at a time giving directions -- otherwise the voices would start arguing about directions. rolleyes

I think you mean they always know where they want to go (aka one-track mind). Does WebUpdater not offer you any additional Australian/AmericanEnglish/British voices?

I don't have a 760, but I wonder if you are using a TTS voice. From reading other posts, this may be the problem as the 760 can do text-to-speech or it can do the canned voice. I know the TTS voice can be set to others including TDM (Tall, Dark, and Mysterious) male voices. My 200 has only the canned female voice or the two others that can be downloaded from Garmin.

ɐ‾nsǝɹ Just one click away from the end of the Internet

Just have to ask...........

When you use the webupdater, at the point that it needs you to choose the file in witch to download the voices, are you making sure you have it going into the voice file on the GPS?

Update just gives me

Update just gives me software selections I don't need and voices that are in a foreign language. There is no opportunity to select anything else...tried it again after reading all the help everyone has been giving.
I have been in contact with tech at Garmin and they haven't been able to correct it yet either...annoying at best but certainly not life-threatening. I just know what it used to do and I want it to be able to do that again - not unreasonable.
Will keep working on the problem.
Thanks for all the help from everyone.

Update to Voices Problem

Thanks to Kathy S at Garmin everything now works. We are not sure what happened but all my voices were restored using file transfer from another unit by Garmin.

Backup Files

1roxylady - now that you have your unit working properly, you should backup all of the files from the Garmin to your computer. That way if something like this happens again you can just copy the files back to your Garmin.

No voice..

This happened to me too - and apparently someone else above. Mine got lost when it was taking unusually long to turn on and not knowing at the time what was going on with the unit, I performed a soft reset in the middle of the defrag routine.

I check all the logical spots that you did, but also went to the voice settings and also found that that Jill was no loger checked. I checked it and it has been working fine.

FYI: I learned on another post that in order to reduce start up the defrag time, you have to periodically clear the trip log. It works too!

reset

My 250 lots it's voice a week or so ago. The GPS was not muted, and in fact it still beeped when working through the touch buttons on the screen, but no voice when routed to a destination (although the on screen data was there). I checked all of the settings, including volume level and mute, and when into the diagnostic screens, but nothing was obviously wrong. Turning the unit off did not work. I eventually got the voice back by resetting the GPS, but even that didn't work the first time that I tried it; the first time that I tried it I still had no voice. But eventually I did another reset and the voice came back.

So my suggestion is to try a reset, and if that doesn't work, try another reset. I saw no adverse effects from doing the reset, still had my POIs, even my track log.

This happened to me several times. I finally figured out that it was because it was taking so long to get a signal. I would turn it off and then turn it back on. It would immediately go to the whereto screen, but no voice. Fortunately for me, I had saved the voices to my PC and notebook. Just copied them back to the 750 and was on my way. I won't tell what happened on a trip to Orlando because of this and I didn't want to stop and do a copy. razz

The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin'.

I feel better knowing that

I feel better knowing that I'm not alone. It happened about a month ago. When I switched on my Nuvi 760, a brief message popped up. It said something like "invalid voice". GPS worked fine. It guided me to the correct freeway entrance. On the freeway, I could hear traffic alert when there was a traffic jam. That was it. No voice prompts whatsoever.

Power cycling didn't fix it. I ended up going into the Voice menu to pick Jill's voice. For some strange reason the device didn't know whose voice to use.

.

@coflyertx @jrozsnaki:

Our 760 also lost its voice out of the blue (in voice settings there was no voice selected). Re-selected Daniel and everything has been jolly good ever since.
