Maestro 3250 Battery life

Hi All

I seem to be limited to about 5 - 15 minutes of battery only operation. If I keep forcing the unit to power up it will run again for 5 - 15 minutes. The battery indicator will yield random charge amounts on each power up. ???

Is there a way to force the unit to retain power till the battery is fully discharged so I might sync the charge sampler/indicator to the actual battery state?

I usually have the unit in a Ram 3500 accessory port which remains on 25/7. I transferred it to our other car for this trip and discovered the issue.

Batteries.....again

Except for what you are already doing, I don't think so. A call to Magellan might be in order, although that might be painful. Sometimes they actually give really good answers.

Some questions (Rehashing other battery discussions here in different forums):
How old is your unit?
It would appear that it stays IN THE VEHICLE all the time, true?
Does it come on and go off automatically with the car?

You might want to do a search here for "battery" to see some of the pit-falls of improper battery care.

Battery

While I haven't had any problem besides the relatively short 3 hr normal battery life- I would suggest charging the unit on house current with either an AC adapter or with USB port.

That was/is being done. I should have stated that in my OP.

Summary

Quick summary of things you probably found in the "search":

A year old battery that as been exposed to voltage spikes when the car goes on and off....AND exposed to extreme hot and cold by being left in the car all the time, might be nearing battery failure. Might be.

Depending on exactly where you live, you are lucky it hasn't been stolen in that year; and that situation seems to be getting worse as the economy takes a nose-dive.

I agree that you need to cycle the battery a couple of times before you panic but you might need a new battery.

And I strongly suggest that you NOT leave it in the car all the time......in the future....unless the vehicle is always inside a garage or other private building.

Improved

Well after several re-starts I finally got to where the unit would fail to boot and just shutdown. I charged and it seems to run quite a bit longer. Once I return home Monday I will attempt a full discharge and maybe time it.

I wonder if accessing the hidden menu would force it to stay on till completely discharged? Hmm.

Thanks for the replies.
