Delete text

I purchased a nuvi 265 wt Friday and want to clean out the files I don't need.Done backup in case of any problems.Deleted the voices and vehicles that were not needed.I see one folder for text.I see everything in there except English.Any reason this file can not be deleted?

delete files

If those are the help files, and you don't need them in other languages, then delete them.

I see the ones in the help

I see the ones in the help folder.I had overlooked them. Will delete all but English. The folder is named Text with everything but English in it.

A caution

OK, let's assume that YOU are fully aware of this but I think it needs to be said for the benefit of OTHERS who may not know it already:

What you are doing is DANGEROUS. One little slip and your GPSr may become un-useable to the point that you cannot restore it (a "brick").

For most users, making use of the SD card gives you all the memory you will ever need and "cleaning out the files you don't need" is a total waste of time.
Again, I assume you DO have a good reason for doing it, but most folks won't.

The next time you do a "firmware" or map update, you will likely have to do it all over again.

Just for curiosity, what motivates you to do that in the first place ??

Two

To make more room, and so that "someone" who looks at it doesn't change the language/text to something non english....smile

If you noticed in the orginial post I made a backup.More then aware of the risk.Just like my computer if if is not needed get rid of it.My question is about the text file that I am not sure about to delete.Lots of users clean up their files.Hoping someone may know something about this file who has done it before.

Dead horse

I guess my point was that you CAN accidentally delete certain things that you can NOT restore from a backup, and thus render your unit completely worthless.

Unlike a "real" computer, there is no support for external connections or devices built into the boot ROM.

Just seems to me like the risk/reward ratio is WAY too high.

YES, you can delete the language files you dont need
the OS is not dependant on them.

I got this info from Garmin on wed.

you can delete the voices as well.

of course its always good to have a master BU.

just stick to the language files and nothing else, youll be fine.
BTW its not east to delete an important file, they are in a completely differant folder.

if you screw this up then you prolly shouldnt even be using a computer.

oh and you can delete the vehicles you arent using as well.

there is NO RISK if you stick to NON-OS files

Such as but not limited to

- unused languages text
- unused vehicle icons
- unused languages voice
- unused language help files

Garmin puts these into the software to make the one product marketable for the entire world. The OS is not dependant on them and to think that it would be is silly, what programmer is writing his source code in Estonian or Hebrew?

its just fluff, you dont need it.

I cleared up about 150-175 mb on my garmin, (maybe more..never accuately added it up)

It is a public forum. The answers you get are not necessarily the ones you want......but that doesn't mean that they are not useful.

Apparently you have never seen a post from someone who was "just trying to delete some unused files" and ended up deleting everything. I HAVE. It is SAD.

Not everyone is perfect. shock

OH, and as for answering the question, nobody has answered mine yet: What do you plan to do with that extra memory you will get.......that you could not do just as well (or better) with an SD card ???

SD card cost munny

SD card cost munny hunny.
(granted only a few dollars for a 2gb.. www.newegg.com)

internal memory is there already and FREE!

why spend extra dough on something you already have.
oh wait..thats the American way right?...over indulgence.

after deleting the files my nuvi can achieve over 700mb free (without any custom pois or icons installed.
(available space stock is only about 400 mb)

More space means more room for

- pois
- internal images
- other navicons
- any other addons or map packs that may be released

even Garmin tells you to delete the files to make room for addons and updates.

jakobe.Everything worked like a charm. The only one I was a little worried about was the text folder because I didn't see English in it.Found on another post that English text files are contained within the nuvi's non-user accessible memory area.Even though I backed the files up most of them are available when you run WebUpdater.Just have to put check mark in them to download.
