Loading POIs into Mapsource

How do you load custom POIs into Mapsource?

Without the GPS attached, tried two things but was unsuccessful. (1) Used POI Loader to generate a file (apparently with gdi extension) for Mapsource but the POIs don't seem to be loaded. (2) Again used POI Loader but selected a gdi file as the output. However, Mapsource couldn't load this gdi file. It seems to want a gdb file.

POI

I don't think you can add your custom POIs to Mapsource. If you need to work with any of them you need to save them as Favorites on the Unit then download them from the unit.

.

MapSource cannot currently read .GPI files which is what is outputted by POI Loader. It would seem that the POI Loader developers and the MapSource developers aren't in the same building. wink

The only way currently to view your Custom POIs in MapSource is to be sure that all the source files are in GPX format (or are converted to GPX) and then open them in MapSource directly.

Can custom POIs be loaded from...

the GPS unit? That is, does POI loader create a gdb or something file which can be read from the GPS unit and loaded into Mapsource?

POI

Mapsource cannot read a .gpi file, which is what is on the unit. You need to follow what I posted previously to get Mapsource to read them off the unit.

POI Loader creates a file named POI.GPI. This file extension cannot be read by MapSource.

The Custom POIs cannot be transferred directly from the GPS unit to MapSource.

Thank-You

Thank-you for the answers.

Use a .gpx file

If the file from POI factory is a .gpx file, it can be opened directly in Mapsourse.

It's Simple!

Just right click on your GPX file, next open with the Mapsource Program that's listed. Once you see the locations on the Mapsource Map, you can save. Good Luck!

New version of POI Loader says it supports it

The latest POI loader has an option that says:

Save Options: Mapsource (advanced)

I've run it several times, always get an error message: There is a problem with this Garmin Application

Has anyone got this to work? Looks like it should be able to create a file Mapsource can read.

It's never worked.

It seems like the POI Loader developers are not in communication with the MapSource developers.

use GPSBabel to convert...

Use GPSBabel to convert the Garmin-native POI file in x:/Garmin/poi/poi.gpi file to .gpx or .gdb (MapSource default) format, after which you can open it directly with MapSource.
