Receiver

CherylMASS wrote:

With relatives still around on Friday, I'm hoping for some good deals on Cyber Monday. I need an inexpensive receiver for a sound system I bought on Amazon earlier today. We have a small den 10 x 10 so it need not be very powerful. I saw a couple on the walmart site (JVC and Pioneer), but not sure what I need to look for when picking one out. I'll check CNET and if any of you have suggestions, let me know!

Hope all of you had a great Thanksgiving!

Are you going to use it as part of a surrond system for a HDTV or just for am/fm, CD's? You need to see how many watts the speaker can handle, it should say in the spec. sheet. Do not exceed the Max Watts. In you size room you don't need a top of the line, Sony, JVC, Pioneer are all good.
What did you buy, just speakers? Let me know and maybe I can give you better info.
Side note: First Thanksgiving not in the Boston area. Not the same!! Next year will come down later.

Pioneer 5-Channel Surround Sound Receiver w/ 600 Watts, VSX-518-K

Both can be found on this site:

Either one of those receivers would do fine

The real difference between the two is the Pioneer has 100 more watts - and some presets to set itself up to emulate 14 listening environments.

Good choice for the speakers. Did you buy an upconverter DVD player? Your Vizio has 2 HDMI imputs, one is used for your cable box to deliver your HD pictures, an the other is for a DVD that has a HDMI output. That DVD will give you the best picture with buying a blueray HD DVD player.
You need to know if your Vizio has an audio output to connect to your receiver. Once you connect to the receiver you can control all the sound with your suround system

Vizio Outputs

They have an optical tv audio out port that would plug into the receiver's optical in so whatever source the TV is selected to use would go to the audio receiver - that's how I have my Vizio hooked up. smile

Cheryl is going to need a Harmony remote to run it all... smile

I did not know that a Vizio had a optical out. She would have to make sure that the receiver she would be buying has an optical audio input to use that feature.
