Question to the Members

Hey to all the members.
I have a question on, can I or any of you set the redlight cameras and the speed cameras to be directional. I see here in sunny AZ that we have alot of these cameras only in 1 direction and it would be nice if possible to set the alerts to only alert if that camera poses a threat in that specified direction. So with all your help is this a doable task!!!!

Thanks Bill

directional pois

The poi is displayed in proximity to your location, not direction. It could include a direction in the poi file (instead of just red-light camera, it could be Red-light camera-south), but would alert whether you are approaching from the east, etc.

Discussed with our leader recently

Read http://www.poi-factory.com/node/9328 for more info. on the direction request.

What about?

Did anyone try this:
Let's take an example of a camera that only check cars going South in a four road intersection.

Instead of setting the coordinates of the camera in the middle of an intersection (which results in all four directions being alerted) to set it slightly to the North East of that intersection.

Would that avoid an alert to the East/West cars and maybe even the North bound cars (by having the set point on the NE of the intersection?

If no-one tried this, I will and report the result here.

It worked for me

I had set a speed trap reminder that was only west-bound on the tollway. When I moved the actual point to the north side of the road (where he would be parked to radar west-bound traffic), it only sounds when I am going west-bound. This is on a tollway with a grass strip in the middle, so there is a separation between the west-bound and east-bound "roads". Not sure if it would work the same way with a non-divided highway.

Problem is:

The problem is that the distance to the coordinate would have to be greater than the 'alert at distance' 1320ft being the default. If the coordinate is more than 1320ft north of the intersection then it would also have to be more than 1320ft east(actually should be west) of the north bound lane. Depending on the road the distance between the north or south bound lanes may only be a foot or the width of the center stripe. Also, the alert would possibly go off at an un-intended intersection.

Even off your own route?

Is not an alert only happening (at the alert distance) if the POI is on your route (or the road you're on if not on a calculated destination)? Then by being North of the intersection by say 100ft, it shouldn't trigger the alert on the East-West road, should it?

I understand that it may by more difficult to silence the alert for the North bound traffic though. But at least it would cut the false alerts by half. I think all this needs some testing. Has anyone done it yet or do I have myself a project?

Radius

The alert distance is the radius from the coordinate. If you are anywhere within the alert distance that is set then the alert is triggered.

No, GPS precision restriction will prohibit such task..

this works cause i had that with a weigh station. i had it on the south side of the road and it only alerted when traveling east.

Garmin units are capable of responding to Directional Alerts. Their own (European) 'Safety Camera Database' makes use of them.

However, Garmin have not provided a means for end-users to create them. sad (I have a theory that they're implemented as a set of points, that you have to pass through in a certain order - but a theory is all it is...)

You may be able to emulate this functionality, by offsetting the POIs to one-side of the carriageway. This has a much greater chance of working, where the carriageway is 'divided' (and shows as such, on the map). Also, TourGuide (circular) alerts are much more suited to the task, than the default 'Along Road' variety.

"Carriageway"

I love it, Phil!

Somewhere along the way, we Americans have lost our British heritage. Its a shame, our loss.

I will give this a try. I have done this with some other poi's and it did work. This will take me some time but when I finish and if this works I will let you all know, and I will sudmit the AZ cameras to miss poi and maybe she will post the changes.

Thanks to all for the great info....Bill

The POI Factory database where the red light camera file info is stored is not set up for this type of data.
We agree that this would be a nice thing to have and are keeping an eye on the technology and will be improving things when the opportunity presents itself.

Miss POI

Here's a thought -

Red light cam: Stop at the intersection when you see the yellow light.

Speed cam: Slow down through the speed zone or intersection.

Follow these simple rules and you will not need to be concerned about this matter.

Stop at ANY intersection when you see the yellow light.

Slow down through ANY speed zone
