USB Device Not Recognized

Hi - I went to upgrade my Father-In-Law's Garmin StreetPilot 2820 this past weekend with the CD I bought from Best Buy but XP doesn't seem to recognize the device. Has anyone else seen such a problem before?

Yes, the disk is a DVD. Also, you might need to install Garmin's USB drivers.

Install USB Drivers

Does it make a difference where you install the USB drivers? Should I install the drivers in the same file as the rest of the GPS stuff? My drivers are installed under Garmin program but after a time when I use them I have to tell the using software where to look for them or reinstall drivers. It is a pain.

Drivers

Drivers should always be installed in the default path, which should be in the Windows directory.

You don't need to find them to delete them, you can use the device manager to remove unwanted or uneeded drivers and you don't have to search all over the HD to find them. Nor does the program have to search for them.

USB

You can download the drivers direct from Garmin.

USB Drivers

I have the USB drivers here,
C:Garmin:USB Drivers

POI Loader can not find the drivers in order to recognize my C340 if it has been a couple of weeks since the use of the POI Loader.
I must reload the drivers and show the POI Loader where they are.
After this the POI Loader recognizes my unit and it works fine.
It gets old doing this just about every time.
I tried putting the drivers in the same file as the POI Loader but it does not help.

USB Port

Do you mean when you plug it in it says "device not recognized"? If so, is that port used any other time? I have had USB ports that never get used and when I do plug something in like a PDA or camera or something sometimes it will not recognize it. I googled the problem and read somewhere if you do not use the ports they sort of go dormant. The solution was to power down the computer and then unplug the power cord from the computer for about an hour. Then plug it back in and turn it on. That worked for my computer.

Powering down a computer only need be a minute or so, to give the ram enought time to exhaust the temporary charge. I usuually watch for my monitor light to go from green to yellow, then wait a minute before restarting.

circuit city

Be glad that you didn't buy it at Circuit City. All stores in the Atlanta area are closing.

Try this:

I had similar issues, my solution is here:

Not sure if that is what's happening to you...

Simply powering down didn't work for me. The forum I got it from said after powering down to completely unplug the power cord from the back of the computer and let it sit. After I did this my USB ports all worked again.

Oops, forgot to mention

I usuually watch for my monitor light to go from green to yellow, then UNPLUG CPU and wait a minute before restarting.

Installation of Drivers

A convenient location for device drivers is as follows:

c:\drivers\folder_name

Where folder_name is a description of the drivers, such as garmin, video, keyboard, cd-dvd, etc. By doing this you will know the location of your installed drivers and they can be easily found.

With your usb port, you can unplug your device and then plug it into another port. Install your drivers before plugging in the device. This will allow your system to have the correct drivers installed before finding the device.

USB Drivers

Another thing to try is to uninstall all the USB drivers and then let Windows do a hardware search and reinstall them.
