Newbie Here! Be gentle...........

I've been playing with a series of 4 POI files for several months. I manually set the alert point to 2 miles (10,560ft). I'm puzzled about how my Garmin nuvi 250w handles these. I've read about the POI needing to be "on the road", but I would have expected a radius of two miles.

If the location is just 1/4 mile of my road, I don't get an alert. Is this the norm of the POI community?

Thanks for any replies!

They do not work as a radius.

As you read, they function as an "along the road alert".

It's important to understand how the proximity alerts work on Garmin auto units.

In order to get an alert several things must be true.

1. You must set an alert either through information in the file or via POI Loader being run in Manual Mode and an alert being manually entered.

2. Alerts must be enabled on your unit.

3. You must be traveling on the road on which the POI is located and traveling in the direction of the POI.

4. The POI must be sufficiently close to the road (typically 50 feet or less).

Check out Phil's great guide for more information about alerts.

Radius

I am new to GPS but when I bought it I was planning on using the MyPOI for the freeway cameras then I discovered this site. I have not been here long enough to have access to the csv file but I have entered a couple so far as I run across them. So today on the way home I was driving on the surface street that led to the freeway. One of the cameras I have put in is on the freeway right there. When I got within half a mile(my alert distance) it alerted me to the camera. The route I was going took me Southbound on this freeway and the camera is on the Northbound side. What did I do wrong?

Are you talking about a Magellan unit or a Garmin unit?

On Garmin units, the alerts are not directional. You will get alerted in both directions if the above things apply.

For Magellan units, I have no idea.

Thanks Motorcycle Mama. I

Thanks Motorcycle Mama. I wonder how Garmin does this in one direction! Yes, I'm an engineer.......

Not on the freeway

I have a Magellan, but I wasn't on the freeway when I was alerted. I was traveling East on a surface street going to the freeway. The freeway runs North/South. If that is just the way it is with Magellan I have no problems with it. Just wondering if there is a way not to have it do that other than shutting off the alerts completely it would be nice.

Well, you posted in the Garmin section. Although many people view the majority of the posts here, you might get better answer in the Magellan section.

If you are asking about how Garmin does has directional alerts in safety cameras, the answer is "They aren't telling."

My statements above probably should have been prefaced with "user created" alerts are not directional on Garmin units.

Directionality is obviously possible because they do it, but they haven't shared how and no one has figured out how.

Phil has done a bunch of research. If he can't crack it, then it's not available to the users.

Oh, and I won't hold the fact that you are an engineer against you. wink I have several very good friends who are engineers.

A newbie??

Everybody was a newbie at some point. Don't be afraid. Only dumb question is the one you are afraid to ask.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.
