Nuvi 350 update disaster

I updated to 6.0. Next time I turned on my 350, a screen flashed too quickly for me to read, then screen went blank and stayed that way. Happened each time I turned it on. If I turn on while connected to PC, the same screen stays on so I can read it. It says my map NT 2008, is outdated and should be update. When I press OK, nothing happens. Unit is locked. I tried reset and it turns off, but doesn't solve the problem. Since unit won't function, I can't remove the upgrade or restore the system.

You should back up all the nuvi file before you upgrade. Im not sure if you mean that the new firmware is 6. You should contact Garmin site and see what you can do.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I too updated the 350 to 6.0, but so far everything is working perfectly. There must be something that Garmin feels needs fixing, but I can't find any differences at all since the update. I am sure the "brains" on this site will have all the answers and I trust that your difficulties will be resolved without having to return the unit for repairs. Good luck!

Though backing up the original contents of the Nüvi is no bad thing, such a backup can't necessarily be used to restore a Nüvi to its original condition.

The part of the Nüvi that is exposed as a FAT file system is not the whole story - there is another part, where the active firmware resides. That active firmware can & does reference the shared portion. But in the same way that deleting the entire contents of that shared portion, does not stop the device booting, restoring it does not necessarily have any effect either.

On booting, if it finds a \Garmin\GUPDATE.GCD, it may decide to load it into the firmware portion. But it's got to be able to boot first!

Some Nüvi's (the 3xx series being among them) have a Pre-boot mode, that offers an alternative means of loading firmware. In this case, it reads directly from the USB port and can download the firmware in .RGN format (UPDATER.EXE is used at the PC end). Pre-boot mode on the 3xx series is achieved by holding down the power switch while booting and plugging in the USB lead, when the "Pre-boot" message appears.

(Not having a 350 myself, I don't have a copy of its firmware in .RGN format.)

Called Garmin customers

Called Garmin customers support. They had no clue why the map update notice was locking up my 350. They took control or my PC and downloaded software to get me running again. Apparently, it had nothing to do with 6.0 upgrade. As usual, their customer service is great, although the telephone wait is tedious. And yes, I have all the Garmin files backed up. The problem was that my 350 screen was locked and the PC couldn't see it.
