Chit Chat Thread for the week of September 15, 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

red light camera

that probably the spot needs red light camera most, IMO.

It seems like one of train drivers was on his cell sending a text message when he missed the red light and collided with the other train, thats what the investigators are saying.I'm guessing that the trains have some red light warning onboard so he can hear the beeping sound, otherwise we would have to start making POI's for the red light locations for the train's GPS's, provided they have one.It just takes 1 little distraction like that and people can lose their lives so easy. Its so sad.

He said all experienced engineers know about that spot and its very dangerous, seems like the engineer picked a bum time to be doing something besides paying attention to bussiness, he wasn't new... and he paid a terrible price...

Well i guess now the authorities will do something about it....geeze, it seems that u have to have a tragedy to get something fixed, when it can be done in the first place without killing anybody.

Getting started

Hi all, I just ordered a Magellan 4040 for $99 from Tiger Direct and have been surfing the web to find information on the unit and adding POI files.
Looks like fun

Just wanted to say Hi to everyone

I haven't been here a lot lately and just wanted to say HI.

Btw, a coworker had a police man show up at her house the other day and he handed her a GPSr unit that was stolen from her awhile back. She never reported it, but they busted the theives and found a lot of stolen stuff and assumed that her GPSr was stolen as well. They hit "home" and it lead them to her house. Sorta cool!

Great Deal

Sounds like a great deal on the Magellan 4040. I'm almost tempted to buy it as a backup.

--
Tom

where is my home??

if I hit "go home", that is parking lot for a three-story condo complex. Hard for police and car thieves to find.

The price was what finally

The price was what finally tempted me enough to jump on it. I never really figured that I need a GPS but for $99 I couldn't resist any longer.

$99... what a price

the bluetooth capability worth the money, and multi-destination routing is not what I have now.
Don't know how that compared with Garmin NUVI.
Also, does it comes with 2008-2009 map?

Gas prices

I guess I should mention the good with the bad, gas prices in Toronto have come down from $136. per liter last weekend down to $119. today and it will go down to $113. tonight. I guess the wind speed in Texas is down below 5mph. surprised

WOW, Lights are back on in the cave

We have been without electricity since the 14th and FINALLY today at 1430 hrs or 2:30 P.M. for others the lights are back on. I usually don't complain or grumble, but it was definitely taking its toll.

The good part is our electricity bill should be MUCH lower this month and I got to meet alot of the neighbors up and down our street. cool

I think the next home improvement project will be a 15KW backup generator. wink

Unfortunately older maps

It doesn't come with the latest maps but for most of the areas I drive it won't matter. If it does become an issue it still works out cheap enough to update the map with the auto club discount.

Ike

Thought I would say hi from Houston. Just got back on line at the hotel my wife and I are staying in. Our house has no roof, no electricity and we just got water. Lost the roof at 3:30am in a 110mph wind which they think had an embedded tornado in it. Came out of it with a few bumps and bruises but have a real mess for a house since about 10 inches of rain found it's way in. As they say "one heck of a ride".

You will find the members here very helpful and you'll find POI's for just about anything. Soon, you may even start contributing to existing files or creating and submitting your own.

I saw that ad at Tiger Direct earlier in the week, and was thinking about going to check it out, as there is a store not to far from home. Might have to take a second look at it.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled forum - already in progress . . .

The Slumping Stock Market

The Bulls and Bears of it all.

If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.

With Enron, you would have $16.50 left of the original $1000.

With WorldCom, you would have less than $5.00 left.

If you had purchased $1000.00 of Delta Air Lines stock you would have $49.00 left.

If you had purchased United Airlines, you would have nothing left.

But, if you had purchased $1000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling refund you
would have $214.00.

Based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily
and recycle.

This is called the 401-Keg Plan.

On a more serious note - despite this week...

The DOW is up 40 points this month, 18% the past 5 years, and 44% the past 10 years.

Congrats

Tampa Fans can finally celebrate, even though you guys really haven't paid your dues quite yet.
but when you take the Devil out of your name all things good happen. I wouldn't mind seeing the Rays advance to the big one. GoodLuck Rays and their Fans.

To the Chicago Cub Fans, I truly hope this is your year to go all the way. Just be a class act and behave as a city and don't get carried away with each win throughout the playoffs, then really enjoy being crowned the world champions, then the parade to follow.

Cubs

I'm really hoping they can get the title this year. I've been a Cubs fan since childhood and have suffered through some frustrating seasons. We'll see what happens I guess. *fingers crossed*

Wow! Rays In The Playoffs!!

Who would have thought? What a great "worst to first" story. shock

I'd like to see them hold it together well enough to clinch the AL East title. That way they can start their first series at home in the Trop and not travel to Anaheim.

GO RAYS!!!!! grin

Yeah, The Bears just let that one slide through thier fingers (Like the football to a passer).

Course there was at least one bad call where they called us (the Bears) for unnecessary roughness when you had a Buc punching a Bear in the head. Cost us a first down and 15 yards.
