Chit Chat Thread for the week of September 15, 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

that is more than 360 years

From newspaper...
Police report that a 2001 <> was traveling eastbound on <> when for unknown reasons it drifted onto the shoulder and then overcorrected, crossing the westbound lanes of traffic and hitting a stop sign and a tree.

The driver, <>, 96, and the front seat passenger, <>, 92, were transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Both the rear seat passengers, <>, 92, and <>, 92, died at an area hospital.

My heart goes out to those who suffer, but is amazed at the news. Everyone will be old someday. But, how old is too old to drive?

Too old is hard to judge

We have a 94 year old guy who drives here - he also goes dancing twice a week at our club and he can "shake it" real well. He drives himself and another guy to the club - I've watched him - cautious driver but a very good one.

We also have a couple of early 70's people that I wouldn't get in the car with.

Very hard to judge !

$5 gas, now that is ridiculous.

The cheapest I've seen is $4.11. This is just incredible. Hopefully it goes down as fast and soon, it's just getting absurd.

Does GPSr help elderly

Does/will GPSr helps elderly in driving?
GPSr benefits every level of ages. Just curious on how it is used by seniors.

Does GPSr help elderly

I think the GPS might be more of a distraction. Most are taking short trips and know where they are going.

I agree

The only thing going up and down faster is the stock market.

RE: $5 gas, now that is ridiculous.

If you check out the interesting discussions on http://www.theoildrum.com/ they seem to be saying that this is mostly do interruptions from Gustav and not as much from Ike. They are suggesting 3-4 weeks after the refineries restart. Interesting theories.

Just what are you calling

Just what are you calling elderly, There are many many seniors on this board i know that just because a person is over 60 they become seniors, I kinda like it myself, get all kinds of discounts, can go on vacation any time i want, dont have a boss (other than the other half) to tell me when i can go and when i cant, If it is monday and i decide to get in the car and go to where ever on tuesday I can do that and if i have a gpsr to guide me then so be it, i can afford one, I like it and will continue to use it even if i cant see where i am going, it tells me where to turn, dont need to see.

WInd of IKE

I can not believe the Wind Damage in Ohio from the Edge winds of IKE..We had 60mph winds as the Storm passed north of is...and Wow..Trees down everywhere. 46% of our county is still without power 24 hrs later. Ironically A lot of the Ohio power company crews Went to Texas to help there.
I have to also comment on the Seniors and GPS. I think they are a great tool for everyone to keep you focused on driving not on trying to read a map while driving.

$5

$5 per gallon for gas here in east TN. That is, if you can find a station that has gas. New shipments not due in until Wednesday and then who knows what the new price will be.

Jerry, Just read in the Maryville Daily Times (breaking news section on-line) that Knoxville is the highest in the country (usually is Alaska). It also stated that AAA expects these prices to continue for 1 to 2 more weeks.
BTW, where were you heading? Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg?

Camping Weather?

I went camping with my youngest this weekend in Southern Wisconsin (Mukwonago) and it rained most of the time. The couple of hours on Saturday afternoon that it wasn't raining, a lot of the boys in the group went swimming. shock

A lot of roads were closed when I got back into Illinois yesterday afternoon due to the rain and standing water but we eventually found our way home.

I couldn't believe that the price of gas was up 30 to 40 cents per gallon over the weekend! mad

And now, back to your regularly scheduled forum - already in progress . . .

The only thing bad about getting old is when you talk to your kids that are in their 40ds and have to explain it took you 66 years to get this dunmb. Loveing every minut especialy when they have to get up a 6 in the morning and I don't get up till I am ready. great live. "Retirement is Great"

Trading under $100.00 a barrel should help too

With oil now trading at around $95.00 a barrel that should make gas prices a little lower as well....and when these refineries get back up and working supplies should be back to normal....just as long as there's no more hurricanes in the Gulf..mind you though, the hurricane season doesn't end until November 30..so we still have to hold our breath.

We got hit with over 10" of rain in the Chicago Area. All the rivers and creeks were/are flooded. Lots of homes flooded. They had to reverse the flow of the Chicago River on Saturday to avoid more damage.

$5 for gas....try paying well over $6 for diesel and filling up a 50 gallon tank. Not fun, i tell you. I cant imagine how big rigs are filling up those huge tanks. I cry when i fill up my tow trucks tanks. Got to start charging a fuel surcharge to see a profit. sad And people dont like that, and when that happens i tell them; diesel is not cheap...

Gas is up

Why is it that gas always go's up when your tank is empty and you have to head out on the road?.

It seems that gas go's up over night, but takes a month or two to come back down. When I ask why is that, they say they have to use up the BIG $$$$$$ gas first.

They should have to empty there tanks of the cheep gas first before putting the price up. I payed a $1.39.9 a litre for gas today. I guess it's about time to get the motorcycle out of mothballs.

I heard that we had a 78 mph gust Saturday at the Columbus airport. We were away from home when the winds hit, and driving home trees were down and branches in the road way many places. My home power is still out 44 hours after the winds hit.

Our power company says 90% of customers will have power restored by Sunday. Yesterday we ate steak and pork chops from the freezer, cooked on the gas grill. Tonight it's peanut butter and jelly!

Fortunately, most nearby (to me) grocery stores and pharmacies have had thier power restored, as well has gas stations. Prices up 40 cents a gallon since last week.

LUCKILY, power is on where I work, downtown Columbus, so I can work, and also post this message.

Good luck to all who were affected by the storm(s). I know what that's like. We were flooded out of our home when I was a kid. It took them a week to get the electricity and gas turned back on so we could return to our home.

I hope your lives get back to "normal" quickly.

I would not be surprised that all areas that lost power in IKEs path this last weekend, won't have a population explosion in 9 months !!!!!

New Logic

My sister, who lives in Lafayette (about 60 miles from Baton Rouge) bought a generator in 2005. It was purchased a few weeks after hurricane Katrina and Rita. She wanted to be prepared for power outages during the next hurricane. So far she has yet to put her now 3 year old generator to use. She has not yet added oil to the engine.

My power in Baton Rouge was out as a result of Gustav for 5 days, 7 hrs, and 42 minutes. Actually, this is not too bad compared to many others who were out for 2 to 3 weeks. So I think my new plan is to purchase a generator with hopes that I never need to make use of it.

(On a related note, I feel for the many who are going thru the Ike aftermath. I hope you can somehow make the best of a bad situation.)

California Train Crash

It seems like one of train drivers was on his cell sending a text message when he missed the red light and collided with the other train, thats what the investigators are saying.I'm guessing that the trains have some red light warning onboard so he can hear the beeping sound, otherwise we would have to start making POI's for the red light locations for the train's GPS's, provided they have one.It just takes 1 little distraction like that and people can lose their lives so easy. Its so sad.
