GPS Basics and Top 20 POI's

I got my Garmin about 3 weeks ago and I am learning a lot of information in this forum. However, I have to ask numerous questions. Where can I go to also learn more about POI's and what the pre-loaded Garmin POI's will and will not do. Also, I am concerned that I am not taking advantage of the best POI's. I wish there was a listing of the Top 20 used. I realize it depends on where you live as to which POI's you might take advantage of, however, I would still like to see what other find interesting. I already got the rest areas, red light cameras, speed zones and time zone changes. I am taking a trip to the Smoky Mountains so I got that one too. What else is good to have for everday driving?

learning about POIs

Go here(a fabulous resource provided by another POI-factory user (not me)):
http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/index.html

Scroll down the table of contents page, and there's 3 POI-specific pages of info.

Any of the POIs, whether

Any of the POIs, whether it's the POIs preloaded on the GPS or downloaded from POI-Factory, generally begin to be outdated as soon as they are created. Basically, they are exactly like a snapshot in time. I see some pre-loaded POIs in my Garmin for restaurants that are now out of business or stores that have changed, etc. For that matter, I've gone to the Starbuck's site and viewed stores in my area and all of them are not listed that I know are currently in business. That being said, custom POIs gives you the opportunity to maintain your own.

Top 20 is all based on user preferences. I get more out of my GPS by creating my own POIs for the offices I have to visit, the recommended hotels and restaurants in the area. Hotels and restaurants are in my Garmin POI but I load those recommended by our employees. Using GeePeeX, I can link photos of our offices to the address information and include a list of office managers so I know who I'm visiting.

If you click on poi files you will see the Most Popular and click on see more it will show them for the last 7 days

Although you certainly can, let me encourage you NOT to print out the text (using the technique on the Information Page)
arrow http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/pageinfo.htm#te...

[ Date of latest text update appears there. Date of latest Web site update appears at top right of Page 1
arrow http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/index.html
or arrow http://snipurl.com/garmin_gps_tricks ]

REASONS
-- Format is not valid for printed text version
-- Tables don't show correctly
-- Information is ALWAYS OLD as I only update it one or two times a month and I may be updating the WEB version several times a day.
-- It will require lots and lots of paper and ink.
-- You will miss out on some of the most important features of the Web site, ie., use of various fonts, font sizes, font coloring, underlines, bolding, italics, indents, boxes, background colors, etc. which are all designed to make the reading easier and to bring your attention to important sections, phrases and words.
-- and, of course, you will miss out on the important graphics which add a lot of color to the articles and, subliminally, emphasize some important points, making them easier to remember. Many, when researching for something they have previously read in a article, can find the material much more quickly, as their mind sometimes remembers the graphic easier than scrolling through the reams of text.

Also, don't read everything at once -- there is just too much material to digest. If you plan not to read sequentially, that's OK, just use the titles and sub-titles contained in the menu on Page 1 to guide your selections of interest. When important, I will include a link in an article to a previous article so that you can catch up with a technique or idea that you may have missed.

Have fun with the site. If you have time, try some of the experiments. They will help the learning experience. Keep on checking the site as I constantly am adding new articles.

If you click on POI Files tab on poi-factory.com homepage, it will take you to a page where right away you will see most popular POI's, the bottom of the list has see more, and you will see the top 20, which i must say are definitly popular, and a good list to go by if you dont have the time to go through all million.
