locked maps

I may have accidently reset my Nuvi 260W and when I now turn it on it indicates "No detailed maps found that support routing. The Nuvi cannot be used without them." Getting past that screen, I checked the map settings and the "map info" button is grayed out. I just got my Nuvi in July and it has City Navigator North America NT 2009 Deluxe on it. Now I don't know how to get it back. I tried map updates at MyGarmin but it indicated that there are no updates for my unit, and I can't re-register it or anything. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You probably lost the unlock key from your unit...

Regardless if you know the key or not you should be able to get it at the Garmin site. Use "my garmin" If you know it you can do it with mapsource...

edit or using note pad enter the unlock code, name the document "gmapprom.unl" and put the file in the garmin folder on your unit...

Before doing anything else, can you verify that the map file is still on your unit? Looking at the Garmin folder via your computer, do you see gmapprom.img ?

Yes, gmapprom.img is still on the unit. I also tried Garmin Support's suggestion of taking my unlock code, creating a text file, and then saving the file on the desktop as GMAPPROM.UNL, followed by placing that file in the Garmin folder. Still nothing.

You see this helped me when my nuvi yelled Maps Locked. I'm thinking if you can call garmin they can get your gps up and running in know time.

Are you sure you don't have a double extension? i.e. GMAPPROM.UNL vs GMAPPROM.UNL.txt. Can you see extensions on your file names?

check folder tools>options>view and make sure "hide extensions for know files" is not checked.

Backup - Absolutely!

What's the best method to back up?

I have a backup external drive

I just copy all of the files on my nuvi to it, but you can copy it to any hard drive and if you are really wary, make a copy of that to a cd or dvd...

Make Sure You Copy All of the Files

Make sure you copy ALL of the files on your Garmin. This includes hidden files. To ensure you can see/select all of the files, follow these steps:

1. plug Garmin into PC
2. doube click on the Garmin drive letter under My Computer
3. select Tools / Folder Options / View
4. make sure "Display the Contents of System Folders" is checked
5. make sure "Show Hidden Files and Folders" is checked
6. make sure "Hide Protected Operating System Files" is NOT checked
