nuvi 200 + CSV TourGuide = ? (Firmware 4.0 issue?)

Ok, before you all get ready to riot, if I'm missing something obvious here, just tell me to shut up and keep reading previous posts.

I was playing around with the RestAreasCombined(Ver.C).csv file and making it "TourGuide RestAreasCombined(Ver.C)" (not worrying about adding a custom sound right now, but I've got that figured out). When I add TourGuide to the file name it no longer gives proximity alerts, but if I leave it RestAreasCombined(Ver.C) I get proximity alerts (I use the manual setting on POI Loader and set the proximity for both file names, it doesn't seem to matter). It seems that adding "TourGuide" removes the proximity alert.

I've spent the last several hours playing with configurations trying to figure it out, but have come up with nothing. The only thing I can think of (unless I'm missing something obvious) is that the firmware 4.00 has something to do with it.

I've read through Making CSV Files into TourGuides – And Their Many Different Uses, TourGuides made easy, and How do I set up a Tourguide? in the FAQ section plus many other threads.

Audio file loaded as well?

Do you get a visual alert on the screen when you load it in as TourGuide and just not the audio or are you missing both?

Do you have an associated sound file with the same name loaded on the Nuvi?

Nuvi 200 does not support MP3 files, so if you are loading in a sound file, but it is MP3, that won't work.

Nothing

I don't get a visual alert or anything with "TourGuide" added. I can get a visual and custom audio (using WAV format instead of MP3) if I leave off the TourGuide and have the accompanying WAV file loaded.

I have a c340

I have a c340 Streetpilot. When I put TourGuide anywhere in the title and use express mode I get visual alert and bong.I have also used manual mode and set the distance and have gotten same results.I have 6.10 not the 4.00.

TourGuide alerts

TourGuide alerts are suppose to be mp.3 files. If you don't associate a mp.3 file to the TourGuide CSV file I don't think you will get anything.

The instructions for making a TourGuide says you have to have and mp.3 file associated with it.

That is what a TourGuide does, it plays a mp.3 file when the alert (circular proximity)is triggered.

As a reminder a 2xx series does not support mp3 audio files

Hummm...

I was under the impression that putting "TourGuide" in the CSV file name would give you circular proximity regardless of an audio file. I thought you could have factory alerts and not be required to have an MP3. For example: alert is triggered and information to read pops up (or can be selected). It seems kind of odd that you can't have a tour guide without a MP3.

So is there no way to get circular proximity on a non-MP3 supporting GPS with a csv file?

Need a mp.3

TourGuides are made to give you an audio alert of some kind. It would not be a TourGuide if there wasn't an audio.

I just tested a CSV TourGuide, one with a mp.3 file attached and it works perfectly, the same TourGuide without an attached mp.3 file did nothing. Not even the proximity worked (used manual mode and set proximity to 1000 ft.).

So just like the Help file about TourGuides in PoiLoader says, You need a mp.3 attached, otherwise it ain't a TourGuide, it's just a POI.

Hannah.I can put TourGuide in my title of the file for a c340 Streetpilot and get a visual alert using express mode with poiloader and same results in manual. Not sure if the alert is a true TourGuide alert but it does give the visual screen warning and the bong.I find it easy to just put that in the title like redlight and not have to use the manual mode for poiloader.

TourGuide and .wav files work just fine!

I've multiple TourGuide files, in BOTH .csv and .gpx formats, that work great with .wav files for audio alerts on my Nuvi 260. The 260, too, does NOT support MP3 files. The .wav files MUST be in the appropriate (16 bit, 44 kHz, mono) format, and you MUST have the sox.exe file (see the "Need MP3 to Wav help" thread for details)in the POI Loader folder. It takes attention to detail, but it works fine when all the pieces are in place.

Good luck!

That's what I had originally thought. I can get .wav & .bmp files to work with POI files, such as speed and proximity alerts for the road you're on, just not radial proximity with TourGuide. The second I put TourGuide in the name (of all files), the proximity alert disappears.

What are you running for firmware? Did you update to the 4.0?

My GPS is a Garmin 260W. I

My GPS is a Garmin 260W.

I have manually loaded several rest_stop pois: some for individual states, the combined file for the entire US, and even a tourguid version that I made. I have not had any luck with this stuff. When I approach a rest stop, nothing happens: No alert. I even made a .wav alert for one of the files.

Assuming that I have done all correct, isn't an alert supposed to occur automatically while I am driving the route displayed by the GPS?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Got it!!

Thanks for the boost of confidence cowmanfl. I've been successfuly "attaching" .wav files to on-route POI's for proximity and speed, but I just got thrown off by the requirement for an audio file for TourGuides and info disapperaing on certian screens with TourGuides.

I got it to work with .wav file. The part that was confusing me the most is that the TourGuide proximity settings were not showing up like they do with on-route speed or proximity settings AND an audio file is required. With on-route proximity & speed settings I see this screen in the settings menu. I get a Proximity Points a the bottom.
See Link: http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa74/herm0162/90.jpg

And when I select a specific point from the POI file on the GPS I see this, with the proximity information listed.
See Link: http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa74/herm0162/110.jpg

But when TourGuide is added the screens look like this, respectively
See Link: http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa74/herm0162/39.jpg (No Proximity Points tab)

See Link: http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa74/herm0162/63.jpg (No Proximity Info.)

I ran it through a simulated trip it worked, but I did have to have a audio file (a .wav in this case). SO instructions for TourGuide's should include .wav files along with MP3 files, depending if your unit supports MP3.

If you are using a csv file you have to set the proximity distance manually through POI Loader and not use the express mode. If you don't set the proximity you won't get an alert.

You can get an alert using the Express mode

That's not quite true.
You can get an alert with a TourGuide .csv file WITHOUT
using Manual Mode -- using Express mode.

LONG STORY SHORT

With 3 files, such as these

Target_Stores_TourGuide.csv
Target_Stores_TourGuide.bmp
Target_Stores_TourGuide.mp3

included in the folder that POI Loader is pointed to. You
will obtain a radial alert at about 1300+ feet from the
location. And this is with using just the Express mode. Of
course if you would like to change the proximity you can
use the Manual mode.

If the proximity distances are set either by doing it manually with POI Loader or they are part of the file you should have to do nothing more once you load them on to your GPS. Once they are on the GPS correctly, they will work automatically. You can test it out by running you GPS in simulation mode and setting your course past a waypoint.

Express Mode

ghayman wrote:

That is true, proximity alerts can also be part of a .csv file. You will see @30 (or whatever #) as part of the name of each individual waypoint on the .csv file. Allowing you to use the express mode. However using this method, I believe you will get two warnings; a proximity warning 36 seconds before you reach the waypoint (the actual distance depends on your current speed) and a speed warning only if your speed is above the number after the @

You have to turn on the alerts on your gps..
