Loading BMP icons to a Nuvi 760

I just purchased a Nuvi 760. This is my first GPS unit. Even though I am computer literate, I am a novice when it comes to these devices. I was able to successfully load a POI using the POI Loader, and adding new vehicke icons. However, I am unable to load a bmp icon. I thought I had followed the instructions posted at "How Do I Load BMP Icons into my Garmin GPSr", but I have had no luck. I keep getting the error message unable to find a csv file or a gpx file. I renamed the icon file so it exactly matched the POI file with a bmp extension, but it still would not load. Can someone tell me what I need to do?

Thanks

Are the poi and the bmp in the same folder?

You named them the same, did you navigate to the folder containing the poi and bmp files when using the poi loader? It sounds like you didn't navigate to the correct folder, i.e. the one with the poi in it...

It sounds to me as if you are trying to load the mp3 independently of the POI itself; that is not how it is done. You load the POI and if it finds an identically named mp3 file in the same folder with the csv or gpx file, it will load that into the POI.gpi file on the GPSr, for use as the alert.

I have the bmp files in the same folder that I downloaded the poi's, so no that is not an issue. I'm still unable toinstall the icons.

I am trying to install bmp files not mp3 files, but assuning the same principle applies, I removed the POI's, and reinstalled them with the icons in the same folder at the same time. However, I still had no luck.

Are you sure you are not loading the icons?

You know to be able to see the icons of customs POIs you have to zoom in to 300 feet or less.

Try this and see if your icons are not loading.

Icons That I'm trying to Load

The POI files that I loaded were Shell stations. The Icon that I am trying to load is the Shell icon. I am downloading the files from this site.

Did you try zooming ALL the way in on one of the locations?

POI Loader Does not "see: the Icon file

The POI loader does not "see" the icon bmp file. I get an error message telling me that the POI loader can't find a csv file.

Make sure you are not

Make sure you are not getting double extensions on the bmp file.Just type in the name and the extension will take care of its self.

>>walmart.csv
>>walmart.bmp

That message wouldn't have anything to do with the icon -- it is telling you it doesn't see the POI file itself. Check for a double extension on your POI file(s).

double, triple then quadruple check

If poi loader error msg says can't find a csv file, then there is no csv file.

1) If you see the files you downloaded on your computer, delete and download again.

2) Rename the csv and bmp files.

3) Recheck all file names. Make sure they are exactly the same with the proper extension. As suggested above, make sure there are no double extensions ie Shell.csv.csv. Note: When renaming, just change the name don't add the csv or bmp, the extension will automatically be retained.

ie, find the file, right click and select "rename" change the name to Shell then move to the bmp file and follow the same procedure change that file name to Shell don't add the csv or bmp when renaming.

Shell_Stations_USA.csv ... end up with... Shell.csv
Shell Station.BMP ... end up with... Shell.bmp

With all the files in the same folder, direct poi loader to that file and follow the prompts.

Sorry for any redundancy, but when frustration sets in, backup, regroup and start over.

Hope some of this helps

You direct POI Loader to the folder that holds the files, not the files themselves.

Thank you, folder is what I meant to say.

I am having the same issue.

I am having the same issue. When using the POI loader, all I have in a folder is BK.csv and BK.bmp. The POI loader loads the BK.csv file and does not see the BK.bmp file. Can I just drag in the BK.bmp file??

No

No, that won't work. POI Loader creates a single file called poi.gpi. In it, are all the csv or gpx POI files, bmp icon files and mp3 sound alert files from your PC's folder.

After you have loaded the BK files, start your GPS and find one of the BK locations on your GPS. Touch one of the locations to bring up the details and then touch the View Map button. Do you see the icon there?

I got it. Thanks. Now one

I got it. Thanks. Now one more thing. I can rename the poi.gpi in the 760, to BK.gpi, so I can load other POIs w/o overwriting, correct??

Yes, but

Yes, but you can also set things up once with folders and subfolders on both the computer and GPS unit and avoid having to rename them every time OR having to reload all of the files when only one is updated. See ScrugneyGunDogs' post in http://www.poi-factory.com/node/17095 . It is really quite a clever approach.
