Guarantees

My first bit of advice would be to make sure about the guarantee. Buying a refurb unit off Ebay ... you take a chance there mate! But buying a manufacturer refurb from a big name store often carries the same guarantee as if the unit was factory fresh.

Refurb units are sometimes just unwanted units that may have a few cosmetic blemishes. So if you can live with that then go for it.

I agree....

For refurbs. Buying form a big box store has allways been a good deal for me. My Home theater system, refurb purchase 3 years ago. Home pc, refurb purchase 3 years ago. Tivo Series 2 dvr, refurb purchase 4 years going strong. None of these components have ever given me a days trouble.

If you find a refurb GPS from a reputable dealer, its most likely a return. Its a good way to pick up a nicer system than you can afford at a cheaper price.

Refurb from good etailer

Typically refurbs from good etailers are units that are sold to them by Garmin and have full warranty. They might have some cosmetic blemish, however guaranteed to work real well.

I have bought couple of them from buy.com and have had good luck with them.

Happy with my refurb nuvi 680

I got it from Tiger Direct for about $100 less than a new unit. I had to get Garmin to "unregister" the serial number before I could register it, and I had to load the most recent maps, but the unit is working great, and I cannot find any blemishes.

Oh, also, the MSN Direct was same as new, 1yr free, added the extra six months at signup.

I have the full year warranty from Garmin, from date of purchase.

I've tried a couple manufacturer refurbished buys

I haven't bought any refurbished electronics like a gps or PC but I have tried a food processor and, recently, an air compressor. Both have been refurbished via the manufacturer even though I bought 3-rd party (Sportsman's Guide). Both items looked brand new when they arrived and both are working fine. Manu. warranty included for each.

I say it's worth a shot if you think the price is right. But there are so many great deals to be found on the Internet for brand new stuff it might be hard to decide. Good luck!

I would just be careful about refurbs. Make sure that you get some kind of warranty with it.

Refurbs

If you buy a new Garmin GPS and something goes wrong with it and you send it in to them; you will most likely receive a refurbished one back. I believe all they do is toss the incoming GPS in a pile to be re-worked later and just send you one that already was re-worked. That's how they keep a fast turn around time. So...to answer your question...There usually is nothing wrong with a refurb.

refurbished units...

I purchased my 660 as a refurb on eBay. Before I bought, I looked over the seller's feedback, both overall and on that product, and decided it was worth the chance.

I haven't had any problems.

Refurb - other thread has helpful info also

Toward the bottom of the page on the below thread is more info on refurb. items. (It says page 10 on this link, but I believe the info is on page 11 starting with my post).

I think you'd be fine. Buy it with your AMEX card to insure coverage.

Bought mine from Tiger

They both had the same warranty. I saved about $75.00 by purchasing a refurb. It has worked purfectly for me. It looked brand new when it came to me. No complaints here.

If it has the same warranty as new

If it has the same warranty as new, I'd go for a refurb from a reputable source. I wouldn't get one off of ebay, due to that authorized reseller thing.
