Emergency Vehicle Mode: Is this the only way to route along part-time roads?

In the Washington DC area, there are many roads that change configuration at various times of day. For instance, Interstate 66 in Virginia inside the beltway is HOV-3 during rush hours, Beach Drive in DC is closed on weekends, and Research Road between Beltsville and Greenbelt, Maryland closes at 6pm weekdays.

I found that my Nuvi 350 would avoid all of these roads--even valid interstates!--at all costs. When driving on a road to which I was perfectly entitled, the darn thing would constantly tell me to get off at the next exit and take a hideous series of twisty back-roads that parallel the highway. When plotting directions, the Nuvi avoids those roads like they're cursed--even when they go directly toward my destination.

Since there's no way to tell the Nuvi how many people I have in my car, and the Nuvi believes that any road that's unavailable at any time is ALWAYS unavailable, I tried different settings until I found that changing to Emergency Vehicle mode makes it give rational directions.

Is there a better way to solve this problem? Are there any other problems that might arise because I'm getting directions for an emergency vehicle, but am just a normal car?

Mute, Off and View Modes

There is probably not any way to tell your Nuvi anything else to make it route the way you want. But it seems that either you live there or work there and know your way around with out the help of your Nuvi.

So My suggestion would be just to tell JILL or whomever else you might use to shut up and leave the driving to you. There are 3 easy ways to accomplish this. 1 would be to not use it to route but merely to view the map as you drive. nother would be to leave it off all together. And the last would be if you insist in having it route for you would be to GAG JILL or whomevere with the MUTE button.

Roads the GPS is afraid to use

It is handy for those of us who understand local roads that GPSs divert out-of-towners onto less-direct routes. But are there any other issues that can arise from telling your GPS that you're an emergency vehicle so that it gets the routing right?
