Adding POI

Is there a way on the 660 that I can add poi's without deleting the poi's I have in there already ?

.

You can rename the POI.GPI file on the unit to something else (keeping the .GPI file extension) and the file won't be overwritten.

adding POI

could you explain just a little better please.

Yes

All custom POI files are loaded into a single file on the 660 called poi.gpi, usually found in the \Garmin\Poi folder on the nuvi. You can rename that file to anything.gpi and the next time you load POI files, another default poi.gpi file will be created.

Here is one of several topics that discuss the technique, its pros and cons.

POI

Do I still have to use the POI Loader?

Yes

Yes, that is the only way to load POI files onto your GPSr.

.

Yeah, I never use this method because to me it's simple enough to just load all of them each time.

But for those who to use it, it works for them.

Here are the steps.

Load the POIs with POI Loader. Once you are done, navigate to the folder named poi on your nuvi (using your computer file browser). In that folder, there's a file named POI.GPI. That file contains the Custom POIs that are loaded. Rename the file being sure NOT to change the .GPI file extension.

Now when you run POI Loader the next time, the file WON'T be overwritten.

Repeat as needed.

Me Neither

I agree with you MM. Once you start doing it that way, you have to remember or develop some tracking method so that you know which POI files you loaded into which .gpi file.

To me its simpler to just reload them all. Now, it would be nice if Garmin built some smarts into POI Loader so that it would recognize files with newer dates on your PC and only load the newer ones and be able to append or just modify the poi.gpi file on the Garmin. grin

I know, I'm a dreamer. But it would be cool if it worked that way. cool

See the instructions in the FAQ at:

Everyone to their own; but for me, this is the only way to do it. Very easy to track as they are renamed to something that makes sense on the GPS, not just 'poi.gpi'. It's very easy to look at your GPS on your computer and see which POIs you have loaded.

OTHER ADVANTAGES:
1. When you want to remove a POI, you simply remove it from the GPS using the computer without having to reload all of your other POIs.
2. When you want to test a POI, for yourself or someone else, you can load it without losing your other POIs.
3. When you're away from the computer with all of your POIs (like vacation or wintering in AZ) and you want to add a POI, just add it without overwriting all of your other POIs.

Just a few .......
