2008 Olympics...

OK everyone, this thread needed to be started. What are you excited about, what were you surprised with?

Hehehe

You beat us to the starting line! It's going to be a tough medal count race this time.

Go USA!

Krieger.

How about that 400m Free Relay?

That was one AMAZING finish!

I have to admit, hearing the Star Spangled Banner being played as the flag was being raised caused me to get a bit emotional.

Awesome...

My wife and I saw it last night and jumped out of bed with repect for those hard working Olympians. I guess you have to watch what you say (referring to French athletes) because it will bite you later.

Go Red White and BLUE!!

The event is great but I

The event is great but I would like to see TV coverage of other athletes and not just USA and China, its a global event. On a side note has anyone found a nice web link to see what's on and what station as flipping from channel to channel drives me crazy and killing my dvr.

Beijing Olympics: Swimming

Who here saw the amazing men's swimming 4x100 relay? That was something incredible.

here it is

When team USA is covered the opposing team is from another nation, in other parts of the world they show their home teams against whomever, so the argument of being a global event is muted.

They have the TV and online listing for webcast

Scrooge here...

Bah humbug. Weight lifting, beach volleyball, give me a break. I like the women's gymnastics, but have yet to find it on the schedule.

Besides, and far more importantly, I'm tired of the Chinese government's behavior and tyranny to its own citizens, and its insensitivity to its dealings with this country, re: poisoned toothpaste and whatnot being tolerated and never dealt with by them. So, I'm protesting for what it's worth. If enough people don't give a hoot about China's showcase moment, maybe it'll have a little bit of difference.

Remember that kid standing against the tank in Tiannamen Square? Little acts have power. I say protest the games.

Garmin GPI files of China Olympic Venues

I came across these two China Olympic Venue POI files from Garmin (http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/cache/offonce/us/services/f...), and would like to convert them to KML (or csv). However, unfortunately none of the gps converters I've tried recognize the GPI file. Any thoughts? Can GPI files be encrypted? Thanks for your thoughts- Enjoy the games!

Beijing 2008 Backdoor Deal?

Who's boneheaded decision was it to give the Olympics to a oppressive communist country?

In 1936 Hitler planned to make a statement to the world. It was Jesse Owens who put the Nazis in their place. Today we have Michael Phelps putting the Red Chinese in their place. And he's doing it in water stolen from the poor farmers.

I can only hope that all the Global Warming Fanatics are boycotting, that polluted city called Beijing, at very least not buying from the sponsors of NBC, If you truly believe in your cause.

Michael Phelps has won his seventh gold medal in perhaps his closest race to tie U.S. swimmer Mark Spitz's record for seven gold medals at a single Olympics.

when 7 is better than 8

First I will say congratulations Michael Phelps for the awesome performances in both Olympics and establishing a record in the swimming pool that may never be broken.

Having said that and hearing the NBC commentators calling him the best athlete of all times in all sports I most disagree, as good as he is and with all his 8 medals in one Olympic he will never come close to breaking Lance Armstrong’s record of 7 Tour De France for seven consecutive years after battling cancer.

Agree or disagree?

I Disagree, That record didn't stand for 36 years for nothing.

congratulations Michael Phelps, Your an Olympic Champion, and made big dreams come true for yourself and our country.

I Disagree, That record didn't stand for 36 years for nothing. not to take anything away from Armstrong, swimming is much tougher, and with out a doubt bicycling The Tour De France is psychical, but doesn't even come close to using every muscle in your body like swimming does.

Here is what I found on Bicycling:
Because the bicycle supports your body weight, cycling isn't necessarily a weight-bearing exercise. This means it's good for people with certain bone and joint problems because it puts very little pressure on them, but it makes it less effective for protecting against osteoporosis.

Here is what I found on Swimming:
Swimming is a great way to tone up and trim down, because to swim you need to move your body against the resistance of the water. Just swimming a few lengths involves most of the major muscle groups, giving your body a good workout. And if you crank up the pace, you'll get a brilliant aerobic workout, too.

My hats of to Marc Spitz for being such a class act while passing the baton.

I did find a flaw with Michael Phelps however, He's a Baltimore Ravens Fan.

Olympics

I'm just amazed with this talented swimmer. He truly is the best Olympian of all time in my opinion. The 100M sprint was just amazing too. Bolt even slowed it down at the end and still smashed the world record. Can you imagine what his time would have been if he kept it going right to the end. I think he's capable of 9.50 or close to it.

Bolt is an amazing runner.

Bolt is an amazing runner. It just escapes me why he would slow down. I know.. he already won but still, gotta give it your all or something you know.

Kinda sucks about Tyson Gay though with his hamstring and all. It would have a pretty crazy race if he was in top shape and in the finals.

I agree that Phelps and Armstron are athletes of the absolute greatest order HOWEVER:

I would like to throw out another name for consideration as best of all time - Babe Zaharias. This lady excelled in every sport she played which was virtually all. She won track and field gold in the 1932 olympics. She played organized basketball, and baseball winning the an AAU championship in basketball. She was a champion golfer making the cut in men's tournaments also. On the cancer front she won a major golf championship after surgery for colon cancer. (check her out in Wikipedia)

Thanks

Thanks for the history lesson! That is interesting to hear about people competing in such a wide array of sports during the current trend of specializing in one sport. In regards to comparing s wimming to bicycling, the Tour De France is no ordinary bike ride. I would say the 7 TDF's compared to what MIichael Phelps did was very close in overall accomplishment. Few realize how hard both sports are, and as someone who used to do both, they are both incredibly grueling.

No history involved just the facts. plus 8 gold medals, Hmm was it seven days this year and 6 in seven days 4 yeas ago?

Plus Armstrong is tainted by performance enhancing drug use allegations, and he will never be able to prove or disprove he did or didn't, because of the designer types of enhancements being used such as Balco manufactured before tests where available for them. Just look at Baseball, and what's about to happen to them.

I never said Biking wasn't grueling, it just doesn't use all the muscle groups that swimming does, period.

the proof is in the pudding so to say, TDF is a 22-day, 20-stage road race that is usually run over more than 3000km. With sleep and rest & food during the tour.

A swimmer or gymnast in the Olympics is done as one bust of energy or strength. all is put on the line for all to see right then and now, and if good enough you get a gold medal for the effort.

By Jerome Pugmire, AP Sports Writer
PARIS — Cyclists who have admitted using banned drugs say the Tour de France may need years to recover from the stigma of cheating, denial and lying that devastated the 2007 race.

Of course this is my point of view!

Oops

Sorry I didn't clarify, the history lesson comment was about the post above my first one regarding Babe Zaharias. I found that interesting how many different sports she was in. The drug comment is irrelevant until something is proven, so I cant say much about that one way or the other. And comparing two totally different sports is tough since we are compaparing a sport that is very high output for a short burst, to a sport that is medium output for a longer period. It is like comparing a 100m dash to the marathon. You have to be a special athlete to get gold medals in either, but trying to say one is better that the other just doesn't add up. How about we say that both are incredible accomplishments?

If you read my original post [when 7 is better than 8] the statement I made was mocking NBC commentators that when he first got the eight medal started to claim he was the best in all sports.

Someone here mention that Michael's feat was greater because swimming the length of the pool and fighting the water resistance was worst than riding in a bike, try going up a mountain "riding" for mile after mile carrying a bike that weights on average around 15 pounds and then tell me what is the greater effort.

So you don't get the impression I'm talking without ever doing either I once rode a bike from Philly to Atlantic City (60 miles) in 6 hours and there was no mountains to climb, can't imagine doing that in France.

Congratulations to all of the men and women that represented the United States in the 2008 Olympics. All of them, through their untiring efforts, are American heros.

Yes, go USA.

And I would add a congratulations to ALL the athletes representing ALL the countries. Their countries should be proud of them for their hard work and for them embracing the Olympic ideals.

And congratulations to the IOC for banning that wrestler who obviously did not embrace the Olympic ideals.

I wonder how many morons actually did that. confused

As for the Olympics, The US holds off China for the most total medals...and although China has more gold medals, several of their athletes are under investigation for being under age - which they probably are (several Chinese were disqualified for the same reason just prior to the games). So hopefully the medal count will change.

I hate cheaters...if the Chinese’ are found to be under age, they should be stripped of their medals, and given the same treatment that Cuba's Angel Matos received – lifetime ban from all Federation events.
