Understanding .csv files

I have downloaded a couple of .csv files from POI Factory, including Beer Me.csv.
I then look at the file's contents in Excel. In Beer Me, many beer places are just listed by name, no city or state info is included.
I know that these files were not created to be viewed in Excel, but is there an easy way to batch-convert the lat/long info into city and state, or at least state, so I can determine if the file is worth adding to my Garmin 260W.
I can copy one by one into Google maps, but that takes awhile.

Breweries

I also wanted to know where the breweries were so I added cities and telephone numbers (I like to call ahead and see what their hours are). I also added Canada and Mexico. If you want it I can email it to you.

.csv files?

Hey everyone! I'm pretty much new to this site and the whole GPS technology in general. I own a Garmin 260 and I love it,but one thing I dont understand is how am I supposed to see these POI files or the info contained therein once I downloaded them to the internal memory.Sorry about the dumb question.

Extras, Custom pois, and then tap custom pois. they will be there if loaded in your unit...

Head over to the getting started page (http://www.poi-factory.com/node/1631) and that should help clarify things.

If you still have questions, poke around the discussions, a lot of questions have already been asked. And when all else fails, ask smile

Mapping POIs

You might also try these:

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map
http://www.wotton.org/map/batchgeo.html

The both will locate the points on Google Maps. The second will also create a Google Earth KML file.

Another way to convert CSVs to KMLs

Converting the CSV to KML and then using Google Earth to see the locations is a pretty good idea!

For the conversion I use POIConverter.js Java Script, it is FREE and works pretty well, just drag and drop CSV files into it, it prompts you whether you want KML or GPX and that's it! Then all you have to do is double-click on the KML file created with the same name as the CSV, but different extension.

This script was written by a member from this site.

Here is the link:

http://dr5274.googlepages.com/poiconverter

If you want to adventure into Java Script, then you can open the script with Notepad and check what and how it does it.

Another idea would be to load the CSV files and browse the locations using the GPS, much quicker than trying to open POI by POI on Google maps.
