Orange County, CA - Project Discussion

This discussion topic is used for collaboration on the Orange County, CA metro area project.

You can provide feedback and suggestions for files in the Orange County, CA project area by replying to this topic.

I will need someone to go through the alphabetical list of files on the site and make a list of links that need to be linked to this Metro Project. I am not familiar with this area and am not sure what files cover this area.

Thanks,

OC coverage

Orange County is in SOuthern California.

Cities in the area include Anaheim (home of Disneyland), Newport Beach (i think this is where the TV show "The OC" is set), Irvine, Huntington Beach (isnt there a tv show about the Life Guard team from here?), Laguna Beach (didn't MTV do a show about high schoolers from here?), San Juan Capistrano (of the swallows fame) and Dana Point (this is where OJ was going when the cops were chasing him down the 405)

If you;re a big fan of the TV show "Lost", you might know that several of the characters had encounters here. John Locke worked for a box company in Tustin, and was also a building inspector, and inspected Sayid's girlfriend's house in Irvine. Libby gave her boat to Desmond for his race, and her boat was moored in Newport Beach.

Doheny Beach near Dana Point, as well as Huntington Beach, and "The Wedge" in Newport Beach are well known surfing spots.

And I am the proud father of a

City of Orange fireman and para-medic.... He get's into Disnyland for free.... cool

Attractions?

I'm wondering exactly what kind of places would belong in the "Attractions" category?

Of course, Disneyland is an obvious choice. There are a couple nice museums in the area that should probably go in the list.

I'm pondering Golf Courses - should those be separate?

Beaches - How many would you say it would take to qualify for a separate file?

Do you think a really high end mall like SOuth Coast Plaza, with factory stores like Rolex and Chanel, would belong in attractions? Or in a separate Shopping category? or both?

Ripleys and Medieval Times are still there though, or were, last time i was up that direction a year or so ago. When i get the hang of the bach geocoding tools, and/or get up that direction again to get a good reading, i'll be glad to upload them,

Volunteering as poroject maintainer

I'ld like to go ahead and volunteer to be the Orange County Metro maintainer.

I've put together a couple POI files for the area, and got one other member willing to help me verify entries occasionally, Nick.

OC is a big area, so I hope i'll be able to find some other volunteers to verify some locatiosn or me. I geocoded some starbucks - 3 of them ended up with lat/long in the San Fransisco area....500+ miles north smile So in my spare time i'm gonna poke around here and at some o the other GPS forums and see if I can find some volunteers in various parts of the county to double check some entries.

oski65

well, if ya want to help,

well, if ya want to help, grab some of the POI files posted here, and if and when you feel like it, make a suggestion for entries. There any interesting attractions in Irvine i didnt include in the attractions list?
If there are, go get a gps reading for it near the entrance....and drop me a note....
and when you have the time and gumption, go by some o the starbucks, or golf courses, or whatever, and get a gps reading, cause I know a couple of the geocoding is inaccurate. If ya load the starbucks file into mapsource, a couple in the mission viejo area get mapped to the San Fransisco area, as an example. So if ya happen to have some free time and energy, maybe you could get some gps readings near the front door of some of the golf courses, starbucks, etc, and drop me a note.

Its totally up to you of course how many you do, but any contribution would be greatly appreciated.

Ok guys - any suggestions

Ok guys - any suggestions for OC specific POI files?

Grocery Stores?
Post Offices?
Hotels?
Bars?
Nightclubs?
Pharmacies?
Churches?
Trashy Liquor stores?

Dry cleaner locations

I got to thinking the other day about files that we seem to be missing. I realized that we don't have any dry cleaning locations for those business people that have an accident and need to have their shirt cleaned professionally.

These would be good to have for the metro areas.

I have an interesting idea

I have an interesting idea for a POI project. I'm not sure how to approach it though, because I'm pondering setting it up to use a feature that may be unique to Garmin Nuvi's

The local paper, the Orange County Register, publishes an annual "Best of Orange County", with Top 5's of various things, voted on by readers.

Anyway, I discovered that I can create a subfolder in the folder I store my POI files in on my PC, put several POI files in them, then sync them with my Nuvi. AFter I synch, I can go to the POI section of my Nuvi, and for example, I'll have a POI file entry for "Burger Joints", and when I select that, the GPS will present me with a list of POI files such as Burger King, McDonalnds, Wendy's....and then I can chose....

ANy thoughts on a POI file group liek this?

Orange County Museums

There are quire a few museums in OC and two that are favorites for kids is the Children's Museum in La Habra and the discovery center in Santa Ana

Flaco did something similar for the Tampa Bay area. Check out how he put his together: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/9692

We also have a lot of other people geocoding the top lists from their areas and adding them to the metro areas. Here is waht Disneyteach put together for Chicago: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16256

Ya know I forgot all about the CHildren's Museum....I'll add that...
And I believe i already have the Discovery Center, but I just remembered, there's a Nature Center near the Back Bay, off Dover...Don't think I put that in.
Anyway, I'll double check those things, and update if needed.

Was just reading Miss Poi's comments about Dry CLeaning POIs....that's actually a great idea to be honest. its an OOOOOOLD post i know, but was just reviewing some of the discussion in the OC Metro thread....

Gonna see if I can come up with a list and geocode it here soon.

I'm also a little disapointed there haven't been more volunteers offering suggestions/corretions/etc for this area....Gotta figure out a way of promoting this site to people in the area...

You have any suggestions Miss POI? I'm pondering just being blatant and asking for people to submit suggestions/corrections/whatever on some forums, like Yelp, or the local Newspaper website (pretty sure they have forums)

I kinda like that idea..
I might actually do one for 1 or 2 other churches in the area too..

THis area happens to be home base for Calvary Chapel and Vineyard Christian Fellowship, although the later formally has their HQ in taxes now, I think after a merger with another charismatic group based in Texas.

OF course I'd keep them separate.

I;m wondering, how do you list the Byzantine Rite CHurches?

AFter looking at your stutff, i realized you apparently did skip them. I think there's more to be honest. Dont quote me though. I KNOW there's a Maronite church on the edge of Anaheim and Fullerton, not 100% sure which side of the border its on though, but i'm pretty sure its on either Lemon or Sate COllege street. I may be wrong though, and this Maronite church may be the Byzantine rite church you're talking about. Just remember there are actually several "Byzantine" or "Eastern" Jurisdictions within the Church, the Maronites (Lebanese), Caldean (Iraqi), a few Coptic (egyptian) churches that united with Rome, and i beleive even a few Romanian and Ukranian churches.

I'm not sure if i should group them with the latin rite churches. What are YOUR thoughts on how to group them? having them all in 1 file since they're all in communion with ROme? or perhaps one for latin rite, and 1 for the various eastern rite churches? (after I do some digging and find info on them here in the area) I figure having a file for every jurisdiction would get unwieldy, some of them only have a small membership in the US, and at best might have 2 or 3 churches in the entire Southern California area....

It's up to you....

Skunkape:

Your call, but my recommendation is to lump all rites in communion with Rome (Marionite, Caldean, Coptic, etc) together with the latin rite Catholic churches.

I will try to research OC catholic rites further and get back to you.

I would recommend keeping the EASTERN ORTHODOX (Russian / Greek - if there are any) separate from the latin rite churches.

-jgracey

ok. ANd no problem. I understand the difference on the Russuan/Greek/whatever orthodox issue. I DO know we have a rather large Armenian Apostolic presense here, and Coptic as well, and even a church affilaited with the Patriarch of Antioch, but of course i dont believe any the local ones are in communion with ROme, even though I beleive there ARE a handful SOMWHERE that ARE...

ALl this reminds me, i've been digging on the net, because I know i found a webpage a while back with an directory (web directory) on all of the Eastern jurisductions in communion with ROme, with info on their patriarchs and links to official web pages. For the life of me I can't find it now.

THe Latin Rite is pretty well taken care of...

IT does seem you have the Latin RIte pretty well take care of, but I WILL double check the info in your file. So, i;m concentrating on the oriental churches. So Far, I've confirmed 2,and found a 3rd I'm PRETTY SURE is affiliated with ROme:

Saint John Maron Church
Fr. Antoine Bakh, Pastor
1546 East La Palma Avenue
Anaheim, CA 92805
Phone: (714) 520-5303
FAX: (714) 520-4273

THe one you mentioned:

Church of the Annunciation
995 N. West St
Anaheim, CA, 92801
Pastor: Rev. Msgr. George Vida
Phone: 714-533-6292
Fax: 714-991-9738
Parish Center: 714-991-9782

This one I just sent an email to, to be sure I have
the right Chaldean church:
St. George Chaldean Catholic Church
4807 W. McFadden, Santa Ana , CA 92704
Phone (714) 531-7760; Fax (714)-775-1442

OC Orthodox churches

skunkape:

I found these Orthodox (not affiliated with Rome):

St. John the Baptist

Anaheim CA 92801

St Paul Greek Orthodox

Irvine, CA 92604
www.stpaulsirvine.org

Greek Orthodox Mission of South Orange County
P.O. Box 1214
San Juan Capistrano, Ca 92693

I could not find any RUSSIAN ORTHODOX in OC

Looks like you are ahead of me on the others (affiliated with Rome)

Ya.. i am ahead..smile

Got me thinking about the Eastern jurisdictions - did some reading afew years back, wanted to do more, found this topic a good excuse to go back:-)

ANyway - got an email back from the priest at the Melkite congregation - as far as he knows, the 3 I have are the only ones in OC affiliated with Rome.

Now, here's what im thiking, since you've already got the OC Catholic file pretty well done, whu dont you just go ahead and add those 3 I posed above, the Maronite, the Melkite and the Chaldean, I'll just link to it on the OC Metro page.

WHich reminds me, i need to talk to Miss POI bout that....

ANyway, next day or 2 when I catch up on some sleep and ponder how I want to approach the orthodox churches some more. Btw, there's a coptic, 2 Armenian apostolic and an Antioch orthodox too, but I;ll do more digging later...

No rush :-)I suspect the people having a hard time finding a church around here at the moment, are having a hard time because they're more interested in the beach, what with the near 100degree heatwave smile

Update complete

Skunkape:

I went through each parish listed on the ORANGE county diocese web page (http://www.rcbo.org/) and sure enough they listed the Maronite, Byzantine, and Chaldean rite churches. I also found a new Melkite GREEK church which apparently is sharing with the Chaldean church in Placentia (while they are doing a fund raiser to build their own church)

I have added them to my POI file (as well as a few I missed the first time). redface
