Converting Rest Stops to Tour Guides?

How do I modify the files in my Rest Stop Folder so they function as Tour Guides? If this is possible, could someone provide an illustration> Do I have to change every entry in the folder (say, for Pennsylvania) or do I just change the name of the folder that I will save to my Nuvi 260W?

Thanks.

Do a little reading hear

Is it enough to rename the folder so it is called:
TourGuide RestAreasCombined.csv?

Yes.Just make sure TourGuide

Yes.Just make sure TourGuide is spelled exactly like this TourGuide. You can install the rest stops using the express mode or to increase alert distance use manual. This is just a basic set up you can add wave files but thats another topic.

You asked about renaming the folder, but your example is a file. Changing the folder name won't do anything. As for renaming a csv file, there have been different opinions expressed as to whether a csv works -- TourGuides are normally gpx.

I am still trying to sort

I am still trying to sort out how to make a RestArea poi act as a Tour Guide.

Here is how my directory structure looks on my hard drive; main folder, sub-folder1, sub-folder2, and csv file within subfolder2:

Garmin
My Poi
Interstate Rest Areas
PA Interstate_Rest_Areas_...csv

Now, will I achieve my objective if I just rename the sub-folderso it all looks like this:

Garmin
My Poi
TourGuide Interstate Rest Areas
PA Interstate_Rest_Areas_...csv

From what I have read on this site, I believe that I do not have to change the .csv file into a .gpx file for doing a Tour Guide on my Nuvi. What do you think? I would use my POI Loader to place this information onto my Nuvi 260W.

Thanks.

I have read and re-read. I do not understand the section dealing with going to the Nuvi drive and renaming the poi.gpi file. I am just not grasping this end step.

You only have to do this if you don't want to have to reset the proximity distance every time you load new or make changes to POIs loaded on your GPS.

When you load new or updated POIs into your GPS it overwrites the POI.gpi file, thus erasing all the previous set parameters you had. Saving these files as individual POIs (by renaming the POI.gpi file on your GPS as you load the POIs separately )will keep the PoiLoader from erasing that individual file, thus keeping it intact and you not having to reload all the POIs on your GPS..

Just change the csv file name with TourGuide in it.Here is example of how I would do it.Putting the rest stop csv files in the subfolder.
My Poi=Main Folder
Rest Areas=Subfolder
TourGuide PA Interstate.csv

I have tried this with my c340 with just the bong alert and it worked using TourGuide in the title.

I was informed that TourGuide would not work with C340 because the C340 would not support mp3 .
I will definitely have to try it out on a couple of my files to see if I get the "bong" for a radius distance. I'll try it out with my C330 also - nothing to lose trying !

It will not work with wave files like the nuvi 200 models but you can put TourGuide in the title of the csv file using express mode. The bong will go off.I turned off the gps and used the simulation mode and it worked.

1st attempt didn't work

I tried it with Crackerbarrel file - did a simulated route by the CB location - had set POI Loader to manual 4000 ft. - got nothing at all !
Don't know why - will play some more manana.
Named it "TourGuide Crackerbarrel.csv"
Tried it with the C340 !

I used express mode on POILoader when I tried it.Have not use the manual setting yet.I did write Garmin about wave files and this is the answer I got back.

Thanks for contacting Garmin Technical Support.

No, the c340 doesn't have the capability to handle any type of audio
file other than its own voice files.

Did you turn TourGuides on in the menu?

With my Nuvi 760, I don't get an option to turn ON Tour Guides in the Proximity Points menu until I actually copy a TourGuide file using POILoader first. If you have used POILoader to install a POI file with the word "TourGuide" in the filename somewhere, check your Proximity Points menu to be sure the option is turned on. Otherwise, it will ignore TourGuides. At least, that's how my nuvi 760 behaves.

I sure appreciated

TourGuide

I went on a trip from Chesapeake VA to Concord NC and tried the TourGuide function.I put TourGuide in the title of Cracker Barrel and Sonny's BBQ and set the alert for one mile.Wanted to see if the bong alert would work in actual conditions.Going down route 58 I did get the alert for the Cracker Barrel in Emporia which is more then 50 ft off the roadway.Going down I85 only got two alerts.I noticed if the resturant was off the interstate and located not that far but on the same side I would get the alert. If located on the opposite side of the highway no alert.Something really confusing was coming back to VA no alert for the Cracker Barrel in Emporia and I was on the same side of the highway. When I got the alert the first time I was on opposite side.My question is just how far is the radius alert extended in distance?I believe if running on a side road and one of these resturant were locaten on a parallel street I would have gotten the alert.

The symptoms you have noticed, may well be C3xx specific (since it's not 'TourGuide-compatible'). In addition to it not playing the TourGuide audio, it may well be converting the alerts to "Along the Road" types.

(BTW - that 50' figure, has never been defined or confirmed by Garmin, AFAIK. It may actually be 75' or 100' ... who knows? )

Hornbyp. Thanks or the info.Going to Florida down I95 and I75 I have never gotten alert using the Along the Road alert but in that case the restaurants were over a 1/2 mile from the road.Just thought I would give it a try to see if I could expand the alert distance.
