help for a newbie (can't find custom poi on my device)

I am just learning how to download and have run into a problem. I downloaded the walmart poi and on my computer screen it showed that it was finished, but now I cannot find it on my device. Isn't it supposed to be under extras as a custom poi? Please help a newbie.

?

Save it to your computer and then transfer it to your GPS folder. Let us know what GPS you have as well to help you better!

Cheers!

.

Be sure you are using POI Loader to LOAD the Custom POI file from your computer to your GPS unit.

Then the Custom POIs, when loaded properly, will be found under Extras > Custom POIs.

Also be sure that you are touching the Custom POIs menu bar.

Look at the "Getting Started" page

Check out the getting started section of this site. It has instructions on how to transfer POI files to various models of GPS.

Newbie's are always welcome on the site, since we each were at one time. You should read the FAQ section and use the site search box at the top of each page. If you search a little you will find answers to most of your questions.

Larry ... Garmin Nuvi 650

Sorry i wasn't more

Sorry i wasn't more specific. I have a nuvi 750 and I did what you suggested. They are showing up when I spell them, but not as a separate file like I thought it would. I want it to be under extras and then show as custom poi and then when I go to that have the catagories.

thanks for any help.

.

What categories did you load? I ask because your original post only mentioned the Walmart file.

What does the listing look like under Custom POIs?

I guess I don't know what I

I guess I don't know what I am doing. I did walmart and flying j's. When I spell them out they come up, but when I go to extras it says there aren't any loaded, so i don't even have the custom poi catagory. Sorry to be so much trouble.

.

Where are you spelling them out? If you are under Where to? > Food, Lodging..., then you are searching the built in POIs and not the Custom POIs.

Each time you run POI Loader, it creates a new poi.gpi file on your GPS unit containing the Custom POIs that you load at that session. It overwrites any Custom POIs that are already loaded, so you need to load all of them at the same time.

Create a folder on your computer for your Custom POI files.

Download and/or create whatever Custom POI files you want to load onto your GPS unit and place ALL of them in that folder and keep them there.

You can have subfolders under your main folder, if you want. The folders will create categories. You can't have more than one level of subfolder. The files themselves will create the subcategory.

When you run POI Loader, point it to the main POI folder. Then on your unit when you go to Extras > Custom POIs (and you TOUCH the Custom POIs menu bar), you will see the categories that you loaded.

For example, it might look like this.

> My POI (Main folder)
>> IHOP (subfolder)
... IHOP.csv
... IHOP.bmp
>> National Parks (subfolder)
... National Parks.gpx
... National Monuments.gpx
... National Recreation areas.gpx
... National Parks.bmp
... National Monuments.bmp
etc.
