How do I run a normal destination and include Rest Area POI

I am obviously new to the Garmin GPS (760) arena and can't figure out 3 things: 1) how do I key in a normal destination (i.e. to Denver from Dallas) and include Rest Areas POI at the same time? 2) Is there any way to continue on the normal destination when you shut the car off and then get back in it 3) Is there a good way to organize and put on the SD card POIs (i.e. directory structure).. I don't quite understand how the Garmin retrieves data yet? Thank you for your assistance

1) I don't know that GPS

1) I don't know that GPS works on cities as destinations. It works off of coordinates, as in longitude and latitude. You'll have to be more specific than just saying you want to go to Dallas. Where in Dallas do you want to go?

2) If I'm on a trip, I will leave the unit on when I leave the car so I get accurate trip times. But I am pretty sure it retains the destination even after turning it off.

3) You can organize the POIs however you want. Each directory will show up as a category on your GPSr, and then each POI file itself will be a category. I like to groups my POIs similar to how the built-in ones are, such as Food, Attractions, Stores, etc. So I have a Food directory, an Attractions directory, etc.

.

1.) If you go WhereTo/Cities, you can spell the destination city and hit GO.
2.) With my 660, the destination stays in memory even when I turn it off.
3.) Organization on your computer carries through to show as categories on the GPS -- everything is within the single POI.gpi file on the GPS. The following details were provided by Motorcycle Mama and explain perfectly:

You can have subfolders under your main folder, if you want. The folders will create categories. You can't have more than one level of subfolder. The files themselves will create the subcategory.

For example, it might look like this.

> My POI (Main folder)
>> IHOP (subfolder)
... IHOP.csv
... IHOP.bmp
>> National Parks (subfolder)
... National Parks.gpx
... National Monuments.gpx
... National Recreation areas.gpx
... National Parks.bmp
... National Monuments.bmp
etc.

In this example, IHOP and National Parks show up as categories and then under National Parks, the subcategories of National Parks, National Monuments, and National Recreation Areas show up.

Here are some screenshots of what it would look like.

This is a shot of the folder and files on my computer.

This is how the first level shows up on my Zumo.

When I select the National Parks category, this is what I get.

Then if I select National Monuments, I get this.

Welcome to the POI Factory. We were all new here once smile

  1. You will receive alerts for any custom POIs such as Rest Areas, red lights and speed cameras on any trip you take.
  2. The nuvi remembers your active route. When you turn it back on, it will restart your trip where you left off.
  3. You organize POI directories on your PC. The directories translate to categories on the GPS. See Motorcycle Mama's excellent post in http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8674

EDIT: I see Bentbiker beat me to it, although I have a different perspective on your question #1

I know I am somewhat dense,

I know I am somewhat dense, but if I have the Rest Area POIs in the 760 and I go to someplace in Colorado, on the trip does it automatically tell me when there are rest areas or do I have to load it when I start the trip? I guess the general question is are all POIs active when you go to a destination?

Maybe

You will receive alerts automatically on all POIs for which you set an alert (usually by using POI Loader in manual mode. Or, you can always go to Custom-POIs and find the nearest POIs under your various categories.

Rest Area POIs

If you have the alert set using the manual mode in POI Loader you will get alerted based on the distance you set for the rest areas. The custom pois are active and the alerts will stay the same until you update the files again. If alerts are not set all you have to do is touch the screen for the custom poi you want and it will show the closest 50 locations to you.The shortest distance being first.

I have a question along

I have a question along these lines if I may. I have created a master folder on my computer called POI. In that folder are 4 category files called, Red Light, Speed Camera, Rest Areas, and Ferry Systems.

I have uploaded the contents of the master folder to my Nuvi 780 manually using the POI Loader.

My problem is the 780 does not have these categories added to the POI selection. Am I doing something wrong?

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, a quick thanks to everyone who helps on this forum. you are awesome!!

.

Create a subfolder in your main folder for each of your categories and put the corresponding file in each subfolder. The subfolders will create categories under your Extras > Custom POIs menu. You can't have more than one level of subfolders under your main folder.

Thanks Motorcycle Mama. It

Thanks Motorcycle Mama. It would seem that I was looking for them in the wrong spot. Once I went to "extras", they were all there.

I'm glad you are all here smile

update or delete

To refresh the data, do I just load the new data and it will overwrite what is there or do I need to delete it and then add the refresh? Also, if I want to delete a POI, do I just delete the directory in the 760?
As staybright stated, "Thanks to all of you, you have provided a very good education."

When you load new POI files

When you load new or updated POI files onto your GPSr using Garmin's POI Loader it will automatically delete old files and then load new files.
But it will delete ALL Custom POI files on your GPSr before loading new files.

I don't know whether you mean deleting a single location or an entire POI file, but any change to a POI file is done on your computer before loading a new POI.gpi file to the GPSr using POI Loader. You shouldn't have any category directories on the GPSr at all -- those are on your computer.

Still Trying

Getting more dense I guess. On my computer, I have a directory of Garmin POI and sub-directories under that i.e.

\Garmin POI
directory under Garmin POI\Rest Areas (with the downloaded files)

Using POILoader, I load from computer
\Garmin POI\Rest Areas to
Removable Drive - Directory structure is \Garmin POI\Rest Areas

When I start the 760 it asks me if I want to convert the files over so if I remove the card the files will still be there... Is there a good answer? yes or no? How much space is available on 760 memory?

Biggest Problem: I can't find the POIs. I go to Where to >Extras nothing is there...... if I go to Where to >Points of Interest, it gives me Food, Fuel, Transit etc. How do I find the POIs that I loaded? Thanks again.

Your computer directories sound OK, but there should be no corresponding directories on your GPSr. You should have only one file -- POI.gpi -- and it should be in the Garmin/POI directory. That is where POI Loader should have deposited it. If you move it from that folder/directory, the 760 won't use it.

As for transferring to the unit from the card, it is a personal preference thing. I keep everything (music, books, pictures) on my card. Then if I want to run a test file, I can direct POI Loader to load it directly to the unit and not overwrite my real POIs. Then I can delete the POI.gpi on the unit when I'm done testing.

Edit: I just remember somebody reporting that if you use sub-folders on your computer, you must have at least 2 sub-folders.

Not necessarily

Actually I have a Garmin folder on my microSD card and within that folder is a POI folder. Within that folder I have multiple .gpi files. I know that many folks keep ALL of their POI files in the same place on the computer and upload/overwrite them all each time. I don't do that. I have multiple files that I don't need to update often so I renamed them after I uploaded. The BJ's restaurants database I uploaded and then changed the poi.gpi name to BJs.gpi and I did the same for various other files. You don't HAVE to have just a single file.

I don't transfer the files to my 760. When prompted I answer YES and then tick the box to SKIP the file and select the option to not ask me again.

I finally figured it out

I finally figured out that you have to touch the "Custom POIs" and that will take you to the POIs that you have saved. Boy what a dumbie I am and now fickle. I just took it for a road test, so I need a new answer -- after having loaded "Starbucks", for example, is there anyway to stop it when I am not looking for a Starbucks? What it did was give a lot of alerts around where there were Starbucks. If what I read is true, it looks like the only way to "not" use the file is to delete it or take the card out that it is on. Is there a better answer? Again, thank everyone that has helped me out of the learning-curve slump!

Thrak,
You are missing the point -- your gpi files are all in the folder Garmin/POI. He says he has his gpi file(s) in a folder with a path of Garmin/POI/Rest Areas -- just like his computer. When I said you should have a single file called POI.gpi, I was talking about the result of running POI Loader and what IT creates and WHERE it deposits it.

just be more selective with POI Loader

you don't have to use the ALERT feature of POI Loader on all files. Just set the alert for those you want to be alerted to.

It gets easier as you play with it....

You will need to delete the file and re-upload it with POI Loader and NOT set the alert. There are way too many Starbucks out there!

You'd be surprise how often this happens. The only reason nobody asked you about it earlier was that you said there was nothing there when you went to Extras; if you'd indicated that Custom-POIs appeared, we'd have known.

I thought

Is the tour guide feature still broken in the Nuvi 7xx line? It was my understanding to not use that mode as it would lock up the Nuvi.

Is this still the case?
