I recently purchased a Nuvi 850 from TVNav. I posed a question about its track log specifications in Darell's Yahoo group and thought it might be of interest to the group here.
I'd like to use the track log upon return from a road trip to document our route and to sync with photos. I was curious about how many points would be saved and how often the points were taken. Here's the response that Darrel got back from Garmin Support:
"...The Nuvi 8xx series will drop up to 10,000 track log points. These 10000 are fixed to the unit, not internal memory nor external memory. The points are dropped in a fashion unlike others. The Nuvi's will drop points periodically based on routing. Your route may have multiple turns that require more points dropped. When there are multiple points dropped along a longers straighter portion of the log, the unit will pull up some of the points.
For example if you are travelling through San Fransico and you go downtown, the unit will drop more trip log points in these smaller turns. As you travel onto the highway the unit will lay down the trip log points, but after sometime will go back and pick up nnecessary
points since you are travelling one direction for an extended period of time."
