Organizing POI Files

Hello Everyone,

YES I have yet ANOTHER POI question. When I have the POI files on my computer they are all in alphabetical order HOWEVER when I create the POI file with POI Loader and upload them to my Nuvi 660, the order is all over the map. What's the secret to having them all show up in alphabetical order on my Nuvi?

Do I need to rename them differently on my computer?

Thank Much!

When you look on your custom

When you look on your custom poi's they should be in order but once you touch the screen for locations it will show by the 50 near you.

Nope

When i look at my Custom POI list they are not in order. They are all over the map like "California Lakes" before "Airports" and "Zoos" before "Airports". Should I rename them differently on the computer?

But

When I store the different files in sub folders, how do I create one POI file using POI Loader? It asks for a single folder not a bunch of sub folders?!

folders...c:\blah

folders...
c:\blah blah\blah\Custom POIs\Airports
c:\blah blah\blah\Custom POIs\Lakes
c:\blah blah\blah\Custom POIs\Zoos

files...
c:\blah blah\blah\Custom POIs\Airports\Airports.bmp
c:\blah blah\blah\Custom POIs\Airports\Airports.csv

Tell the loader to look in...
c:\blah blah\blah\Custom POIs

With that said, you CAN put all "bmp" and "csv" files in the same folder, ie "Custom POIs", and the loader will handle them correctly.

I don't have any bmp files

I don't have any bmp files in the folders, just a crap load of csv files. So what you're saying is, if I point POI Loader to D:\Extractions\Airports it will find the other folders named D:\Extractions\Lakes
and D:\Extractions\Shopping and create the POI file?

I created a crap load of sub folders and moved all the csv files into them. I am now going to point POI Loader to the folder that contains the sub folders.......right?! Ah hell, the worse that can happen is it work find them all.

UPDATE...I did this and it found the files and created on single POI file HOWEVER it's causing the nuvi 660 to lock up while searching in the sub folders in the Custom POI file

clint45Go on your computer

Go on your computer and make a file called custom pois.Click on that folder and make you a folder for each poi file you have and name them the way you want them to show on your gps.Now go back and get the csv files you have and put them in the correct folder.Make sure your csv file that you put in the folders are named the same thing. Now hook up your gps unit to the computer and run poi loader and click on the custom poi folder and run it.Now look under your custom poi list.

This is the simple way to start out.Once you get the hang of it you can start making sub folders .If you have more then 32 files you will have to use sub folders.Let me know how you do.

This what i did

This is what I've done:

http://www.clintsworld.com/temp/Clipboard1.jpg

And I put all the csv files that belong in those categories in the sub folders. However the nuvi doesn't seem to like it this way.

You have to point the loader to a common folder ABOVE the folders that contain the data. In the case you mentioned above, it would be: D:\Extractions

Then, under the Extras menu, you should see sub-items called "All...", "Airports", "Lakes", etc

Did that

It found all the sub folders and made the POI file but for some reason the nuvi hangs on some of the folders. I can't figure out why it's hanging on one folder and not the others?! VERY strange.

.

Maybe you have a bad file.

Try taking them all out and only adding back a few at a time, rerun POI Loader (each time still pointing it to the "Extractions" folder), and see if you can figure out which one(s) is causing the hang.

Hangs on some POIs

Unless I'm missing something, I don't think it is really all that "strange". The folder(s) it hangs on contains a defective POI file.........or it is a HUGE file and you just think it hangs because it takes so long to load.

Hang

Do you have the latest nuvi firmware and POI Loader software versions? Have you verified the files with a program like POI File Verifier?

Where

I could be a bad file.....Where do I get POI Verifier?

POI File Verifier

http://poiverifier.com/ or search above.

Where do I get POI Verifier

http://poiverifier.com/ .Have you tried to re-download the file from the site you got it from that is causing the problem

Here

I downloaded the file from this website so, don't know what to say about that. I went back to removing all the files from sub folders and just creating the POI file as one big file and it's working fine again. All the POI's open fine now but for some reason it sure don't like the idea of sub folders. I wonder if the fact that I'm storing the POI file on a SD card has anything to do with it?

One more thing, I have a card reader on my computer and found that I don't have to connect the nuvi via the USB cable to create the POI file. I just find the SD card in MY COMPUTER and then run POI Loader pointing it to the SD card slot and BINGO, it creates the file on the SD card. I then slip the card into the nuvi for it to read the new POI files.

This is ALL probably old news to most of you but hey, I just found out it works so, happy days for me! (LOL)

Cool, glad it workout for you bud. I know it can seem like a hassle at times, but with good info given by members and little hit or miss on your own, you’re bound to get it right sooner or later. smile

nüvi 3590LMT "always backup your files"

POI-Loader

You only want to have one step down in subfolders. It doesn't do nested (sub-sub folders).

Happy

I ended up just getting rid of all the other folders and creating the POI file from ALL THE FILES in one folder on my computer. Sure, it's not as organized as I would like it to be but the Nuvi is happy and if its happy, then I'm happy! (LOL)
