OverLoading POIs (Danger)

Is it possible to...

...Overwrite one POI instance with a POI of the same coordinates in a subsequently loaded cvs file? (In this case, which one wins? Or do both show up and can alert?)

...OverLoad by placing too many POIs on one GPS module, slowing it down, crashing it, confusing it, or causing other complications or failure?

...Load a misconfigured POI which causing danger or damage to the GPS hardware, software, or operation of the unit? (What is the worst that has been known to happen? And how can we prevent against this?)

Thanks.

1. Both Poi's show up.
2. There is a limit of how many poi’s can be added but its somewhere in the thousands.
3. No damage can occur to the hardware or software that I know or ever heard of.

I'm collecting ones that I think ill use on my trip next week, and i believe since some arent local only, they are national, ill have many thousands loading today.

Does anyone know where we can verify the total limit in thousands of POIs that can be loaded? (at least to a Garmin c530.) Thanks.

There is lots of room

Hi, ACougar,

I've got in excess of 78,800 pois loaded in my Nuvi 260 and have had no trouble at all. POI Loader takes about 40 seconds to load them to my SD card and the install to the Nuvi takes less than 20 seconds from there. There is still considerable room on the Nuvi drive, but I don't know if there is some software/firmware maximum imposed by Garmin.

Overload POI's

If you are putting all of lyour POI's on a card then your limit would be the size card you have. If you are loading to the unit you should be able to look at the properties while you have it hooked up to your computor and it would show how much room you have.

No, It will just show you an error as you load them into your gps using poi loader.

I have over 900k Custom Poi in my Nuvi 350.
I believe the max limit is unlimited. You just need to have enough storage to fit them all.

Alert sounds and icons dont work for me.

I can not get the alert sounds and icons to work. I downloaded from this website only. Any suggestions? BTY- I love this website.

On occasion, some combinations of units + POI types induce sluggish responses. This isn't a fatal problem though - re-organising the POIs into more categories seems to solve it.
One reproducible occurence of this, I have seen, is with a large commercial product (single gpi file > 300Meg). It only causes slowdowns on one of my units (the Nüvi 760). No doubt, Garmin will fix the problem at some point.

At one point, gpi files containing too many .bmp files were causing startup failures on the Nüvi 3xx and Nüvi 6xx ranges. This was unrecoverable by normal means, because (stupidly) the unit reads the file when booting into mass-storage mode as well. Sad to say, it's a lesson that Garmin don't seem to have learned from. The Nüvi 760 takes an eternity to boot into mass-storage mode, as it initialises absolutely everything it can think of.
