Free Weather Alert on Nuvi 780??

I have not yet activated my MSN Direct Receiver, and I'm not sure I ever will.

But as I was driving down an Arkansas highway this morning, I saw the little weather cloud icon on my map screen. I tapped on it, and it stated that the NWS had issued a flood alert for the county in which I was driving. Now where did this come from? Does Garmin furnish weather alerts/warnings even though MSN Direct has not been activated?

Not complaining..........just curious.

may not require you to activate

I never activated my traffic Receiver on my 660 but it was working..and has only a month left..and I have only seen it work once. So it may be working...

My 760 does it. I do have

My 760 does it. I do have MSN, as well.

Is Your MSN Direct Activated?

Did you actually subscribe to MSN Direct? My 780 came with a free 3-month subscription, but I must call the provided phone number to activate it, which I have not done. Sure enough, when I tap on the MSN Direct icon on my nuvi screen, it says that my subscription has not been activated. So the mystery continues.

But now I am wondering if I received the weather alert via the data link on my cell phone and the bluetooth connection between the phone and the GPS.

Thanks for your input....

Maybe, but the GPS screen says no

When I tap on the MSN Direct icon on my nuvi screen, I get the message that my subscription has not been activated. So maybe I'm getting it free (sure), or maybe the weather alert came in via my cell phone data link and it's connection to the GPS via bluetooth.

Anyway, it was nice to get the alert, regardless of how.

Thanks for your input....

Don't know. From what I

Don't know. From what I could find, if you don't activate your MSN, maybe you will get the Weather alert icon, but won't have access to the actual MSN icons (Weather, Movies, MSN Traffic alerts, etc.)

While Bluetooth is capable of data transfer between devices - it only does hands-free audio with GPSrs, and I'm not aware of any cell phones capable of doing data at this level either.
