What is this prompt at startup?

I have a nuvi 760 with 3.0 and 2009 maps. It's been working fine, both as a GPS unit and MP3 player with SD card, for about 1 month. That is, until 2 days ago when I started getting this message everytime I power it up: "New Extras data found on card. Would you like to install this data so that it will be available if the card is removed?"

There is nothing in the SD card but an MP3 folder with separate album folders within.

The following constitutes what I did, one of which may have triggered this issue:
- upgraded to 3.0 firmware
- upgraded bluetooth firmware
- used POI loader to load some POI files
- deleted all my vehicle icons supposedly to eliminate lag
- removed my SD card
- used the unit for a day driving around town to confirm that the lag was NOT eliminated
- therefore that night, I added some vehicle icons back
- while the SD card was out of the nuvi, I also arranged MP3 contents
- re-inserted the SD card

I've been clicking "No" to the prompt, concerned that it may actually load 3Gb of mp3's into the unit. What should I do to get rid of this message? Should I click "yes"?

Here's the culprit right here. Your POI files are asking permission to migrate to the unit.

Clicking 'yes' will load your custom POI's from the card to the unit.

Clicking 'yes' will load your custom POI's from the card to the unit.

.......but after you clicked "yes", you will be presented with the choice to "don't ask again" to decline loading the custom POI's onto the internal drive as well as not to have to see the prompt again.

GPI File?

That sounds like the message that is usually issued when a new gpi file is encountered on the card. Are you sure that you didn't somehow load a POI file onto the card? It would show up as POI.gpi in the Garmin/POI folder. If it is there, you would say yes to the question and that would trigger another screen asking if you want to transfer that particular file (Yes or No) and there would be a checkbox to check if you don't want to be asked again.

Edit: I type too slow when I try to watch TV at the same tim. JJ has it right.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Thanks! It worked.

Well, I clicked "yes" and the next screen showed a message about loading custom POI's. The wording of the prompt at startup misled me to think it's going to load something from the SD card. Phew!

Of Course

As I've posted before, of course you'd think it is going to transfer data -- that is what it says it is going to do. It is undoubtedly the most counter-intuitive bit of programming I've ever seen -- to force you to say "yes" to a transfer when you really don't want a transfer. They solved it on the 6xx series by putting the checkbox on the first screen, but then they reverted to the previous technique on the 7xx.

Weird isn't it?

I had the same issues/concerns when I got my 760. Like you, I got advice from folks here about selecting Yes when I really wanted to say No. I think that the programmer for this function must have been smoking crack or something. What an idiotic way to deal with things.

New Extras data found on card. Would you like to install.......

"New Extras data found on card. Would you like to install this data so that
it will be available if the card is removed?"

I just ran into this tonight after installing a 4 GB micro SDHC card on a Garmin Nuvi 500. So the answer is "NO" I gather to simply install the POI files on the card?

I did that and it seems to offer the POIs seemlessly. I have one group on the card and two other groups on the device and it seems to be seemless when selecting Custom POIs, which is great.

You are correct in what you say, but you will continue to be asked this same question every time you start up, until you tell it to quit asking you. And, as I'm sure you read, with many models you must say yes to get to a screen with the appropriate checkbox.

Nuvi 255 - Confirmed

I confirm the same behaviour for the Nuvi 255.

If you get this message and don't want to install them to your GPSr (nor get annoyed with the message everytime you boot it) :
"New Extras data found on card. Would you like to install this data so that it will be available if the card is removed?"

You have to answer YES(odd!!), then check "Don't ask me again" and click SKIP.

Notice that this is a "per-filename setting" so if you change your POI filename/path or add a new one to the microSD card you'll have to repeat the steps to ignore the file import dialog at startup.

That's not what was needed in my case, but you could also choose INSTALL instead of SKIP for a particular file(s)..

Like an idiot I think I said

Like an idiot I think I said install and dont ask again.

i would like to get it back so I can do skip and dont ask again - can't see the point in having them on the Garmin as well as the SD card.

Anyone know how I can reset that so it asks me again and I can skip and tell it not to ask again ?

cheers

Jim

it's ok - I sent more POI's

it's ok - I sent more POI's into the SD card and it asked again - so all sorted smile

Next time you have your unit connected to the computer look in the Garmin folder on the device (not the card). If you have a POI.GPI file there, delete it as it is the file you copied over earlier. Another solution is to rerun POILoader and select the device (not the SD) and tell POILoader to delete existing POI. This way you will have only the one POI File.

Same Thing with 765T

I used to get the same thing on my 765T when I was keeping the POI files on the SD card. My old 350 only displayed this prompt whenever I updated POIs. The 765T displayed it everytime I powered the unit on. I started putting the POI files on the 765T itself and began using the SD card for mp3 files. Since then, I haven't seen the prompt.
