Understanding VIA Point(s)

I would appreciate a narrative that will explain in some detail how one make use of a via point while following the Nuvi 260w GPS's instructions to a destination. Right now I do not understand the difference between a VIA point and a selection of a rest stop chosen from the POIs that are in my custom folder. Many thanks.

I use a via point to

force the gps to take a route I desire. As an example I live in Southern California. I can take several different freeways to reach the same point. The gps may select a route taking the 101 freeway but I know because of traffic issues I don’t want to take that freeway so I will pick a point on the 134 freeway as a via point. The gps will then send me to my destination via the 134 instead of the 101.

You could use a rest stop if one were available and accomplish the same thing.

Waypoints

Adphiuchus is correct for use of waypoints. I use garmin's poiloader to set a mileage limit for warnings when the next rest stop is available. This gives you a heads up when you need to stop.

After setting the via point

After setting the via point and arriving at its location, what do I do? Do I turn off the GPS while spending time at the via stop? If I do turn it off, whenI am ready to resume traveling to my destination do I select Where To and select the destination again or does the Nuvi 260W GPS remember the destination?

Thanks

When you actually reach

When you actually reach the via point your GPSr should "inform you" and just continue on to your chosen final location automatically !

chesler. The way I do it is I pick the final location I want to go to and touch go.Then if I want to add a stop or force the route through another way I touch menu where to then put the next location in.I will get message do you want to continue to your final destination?I touch yes.Once I stop or keep going it will continue to route me to the orginial location. If I do stop and turn the unit off and then back on it will continue with that route until I touch stop.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.
