Is there a maximum number of MP3 files that can be displayed by a Nuvi 660?

I have a Nuvi 660 with a 4GB SD card. I used ITunes to create a playlist with approximately 1,200 songs. The Nuvi only seems to be able to display about 600 from the playlist. Is this the maximum number that can be displayed? The other thing that happens with this many MP3 files loaded on the SD card is that the Nuvi takes forever to redraw maps while in GPS mode. Have I exceeded the MP3 capacity of the unit? I wouldn't think the number of MP3 files on an SD card should have any affect on how quickly the GPS part of the unit responds. True or False?

I have also noticed that if I create two separate playlists, it just combines them together anyway. Is this something that should be happening, or am I doing something wrong?

Never associated that

I have never associated the length of time to draw the map with the SD Card, but I see now what is happening.
If I start my Nuvi 660 with the 4 GB SD Card installed, it takes several minutes for the map to show up.
I took the SD Card out of the slot and restarted the unit. The maps showed up almost immediately. I just thought it was normal for the Nuvi 660 to take a long time to initially show the map.
I haven't had any trouble with the playlists, but I create mine with WinAmp, not ITunes. I'm also not sure about the amount of songs on the card. I have 643 songs on mine, but I don't know if all of them are showing up.

999?

It has been reported in other threads that there is a maximum of 999 mp3 files that the player can handle. I've been unable to get my 660 to handle playlists (either WinAmp or iTunes plug-in) of podcasts.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

Make them smaller

Create several directories on the card. I have 3 main directories.

Country
Rock
Books

Then put the mp3's in subdirectories of those. I have them in by albums. or artist, depending on how I recorded it. Try to not put more than 20 mp3's in each sub folder. I don't know why this works, but it does.

Someone on the forums

Someone on the forums suggested removing mp3 subfolders from the mp3 folder on my SD card. I tried it and ...wow it worked! I now can access many more mp3s, yet the music is still categorized by the streetpilot c550 via the tags each mp3 was created with.

One Folder

That's how I set up my SD card, one folder named mp3 and I put all my files (each one tagged) including playlists, in that folder. Works fine.

That's why it takes longer to boot up the GPS. It is reading all the mp3 files looking for the tags. The more mp3 files you have, the longer it takes to read the tags. Once the tags are read, the mp3 player can then display the songs by categories - artist, genre, album, etc.

Even if your files aren't tagged, the unit will still try to read each one looking for the tags. It just won't find any.
