Speed Cameras

Does anyone know if there is a POI file for speed cameras around the US. I know there is a big Red Light Camera POI that is being updated regularly but is there a Speed Camera POI file?

Yes

When you download the folder containing the redlight camera file, you get a bonus -- the speed camera file.

Setting the Speed Alert for Speed Camera

When loading my Speed camera file into POI Loader to put it on my GPS, it asks for a speed limit, but I left it as the default. What is that actually doing? Let's say I put 10 mph? Does that mean if I'm 10 mph over the speed limit then it'll notify me or does it notify me of the speed camera each time either way or will it only notify me if I'm 10 mph over the speed limit?

And what is the default set to actually do?

Thanks.....better understanding.

Thanks for the link, but I'm still not sure about the speed camera alert and the default speed. I'm guessing that it will only sound the audio alert if I'm over the specified speed limit.

I'm a little confused still on that. Sorry if I'm making it complicated.

The default

Will notify you any time you are approaching a speed camera. If you set a speed, it will notify you if you exceed that speed. 10 mph does not mean 10 over, but 10 mph. If you want it 10 over, then you have to tell it at what speed to alert.

The default

So if I don't pick a number from the POI Loader when I'm loading it then the default is just to notify me if I'm actually over the speed limit for that speed camera I'm approaching. Is that how it is?

Thanks for the pointer

Thanks for pointing that out Goredsox, I missed that one.

No

It will alert you that there is a speed camera coming up at whatever speed you are traveling.

Check out http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13691 and learn the details; you can kinda skim the thread up 'til PHornby posts and corrects some of our/my misunderstandings. Basically, if you want both a proximity alert AND a speed alert whenever you are above the speed limit, you need to convert to gpx format. If you want only the speed alert, you must still edit the speed camera csv file. If you do a Find on "Camera " (with the space after camera) and Replace with "Camera@" you will edit all the speeds at once. Personally, I'd leave it as is unless you are willing to go all the way and convert to a gpx file and set both a proximity and a speed alert.
