Speed camera alerts

It seems that all the speed camera alert are in one file. Is there a way to separate them so they will alert me when I go too fast instead of alerting me when I am X miles away from the speed camera.

That is how it works.

If you look at the data in the file, you will see that most of the locations do have a speed in the name and will give you the audio alert only at speeds above the speed limit.

Perhaps if you tested one and it didn't work, it could be one where Miss POI is looking for help to find the speed limit.

Am I correct in assuming you feel I've given erroneous information? Could you perhaps explain? Why would I be paying for a ticket?

Simulate Route

Maybe you forgot that you could also try simulating a route that goes by the speed camera?

I will try that as soon as my gps gets back from Garmin. Thanks.

I think what he is saying. Is the way you phrased your response. It sounds like your telling him to try out the warning and if it did not work he would get a ticket!

bluestring wrote:

Since the simulation is run at or below the speed limit, you would have to change the alert speed to something artificially low to have the alert trigger. However, I wasn't suggesting he do any sort of testing. What I meant was that if he had already done testing at a specific light, and it hadn't given him a speed alert, perhaps it was one of those without a speed in the title.

But you read it correctly . . .

Thanks Irish. It sounds as if you understood that I was not suggesting any kind of test -- I was suggesting that if he had ALREADY tested one and it didn't work (alert), perhaps the reason was a lack of a speed in the name of that location. I have re-read my post and I see where confusion could arise. Not sure about the [Engvall/Foxworthy] sign reference, but I now see where somebody might think it appropriate.

I got my Nuvi 350 back last

I got my Nuvi 350 back last week. I tried it out and it is only giving me alerts when I'm 1320 Feet away from the point. If I go too fast it doesn't alert me to slow down.
Is it suppose to be like this or is it suppose to give me a speed alert?

From your scren shot, it

From your scren shot, it seems it's set up as a proximity alert, not speed. I looked at the .csv file......and wondering if we need to include something like "POI name@30" as the name of the POI (speed camera) in the .csv file to have speed alert. Any thoughts?

Increase the distance of the warning

Load the poi's in manual mode and increase the distance.. Mine are all set around 2000 ft..

From your screen shots it looks like its doing what it is programed to do

Oh and it just gives you the warning i.e. speed camera ahead or whatever, you could have it say slow down but I believe it should give you the warning if you are going faster than the speed not slower but I'm not sure...

At any rate you can check your speed when you get the alert

So this file has been totally ineffective for everyone who has ever downloaded it? Phil, is it possible that some units alert without the "@"? Surely, someone has verified these locations . . . ???

Maybe not totally ineffective - but it sounds like at least some of them are working on a Proximity, rather than a Speed basis.

AFAIK, the only ways to get a Speed related Alert, are through the use of the '@xx construct', Manual Mode, or the presence of "digits" in the filename.

Updated

Are we just talking about "Redlight-Cameras.csv" and "Speed-Cameras.csv", from this site?

If so - in both cases, each POI will be associated with a 1319' Proximity Alert, by virtue of the keywords (Redlight/Speed) in the filenames (when loaded in Automatic mode).

The contents of Speed-cameras.csv has other issues, because some of the associated speeds should be in mph and some should be in kph - something which POILoader can't handle (in one file).

idea
I was just looking at the above and have a question.

If I change Speed Camera 45MPH .0218h to Speed Camera@45MPH .0218h it will warn me if I am going faster than 45mph?

If so I know what my next project is... shock

I guess I'll try it with a poi and see if it works.

Remember that it only works with the proximity alert distance.

Qusestion: So if I'm going 50mph and the poi name is poi@45 and I have the distance set at 2000ft, I'll get a warning at 2000ft, but if I'm going 45mph or less I won't?

If you load such a file in Automatic Mode, you'll get an Alert @ 1319', if you're going @ 45mph or more. If you're going at less than 45mph, you shouldn't get an alert at all (though maybe satellite errors might accidentally trigger one?).

If you've run POILoader in Manual mode, and set a distance of 2000', you'll get an alert at 2000' regardless of the speed you're going.

If you want control of both Alert Speed and the distance at which it is active, you must use a .gpx format file to supply the information to POILoader. (Speed after the @ and distance in the <proximity> statement)

You will get a red bar visual alert at 2000ft which stays onscreen until you reach the POI, but I don't remember whether there is an audio alert at that point. You will get audio speed alerts every time your speed rises above the alert limit, until you reach the POI.

Thanks for the replies. I

Thanks for the replies. I tried renaming the individual names in the file to poi@35mph and it works. Some files is at 35 mph and some is at 45 or whatever their speed limit is. Now I just have to rename the rest of them and rename them again when there is a new update.

It would be great if there was a file for Canada Speed and then Usa Speed. Then within those two files there is one with @ and one without.

Icons and POI files

I just purchased a Garmin760 and have been struggling with getting the Icons to show up. I have downloaded a couple of files and the associated icons. I matched the file name and the icon name and put all files in a single folder and then run the uploader and then put the poi data on an SD disk. I then went into the Garmin put the SD disk in and selected extras and the waypoints were there but no icons.

I also purchased the redlight cameras and when I drove past cameras that are in the data base i did not receive any notice before hand even when i specified notice 1500 feet before reaching the light when running the downloader.

Any ideas where i am going wrong?????

I used xl search and replace all

Just confirmed that you do get the double bong audio alert at the proximity distance along with the red alert bar saying "50 MPH Speed Alert Ahead", if you are below the limit. This evidently requires a gpx file as noted by Phil. All my testing of speed alerts has been done with gpx files; I didn't realize csv files didn't have the same capability to give you both. Thanks, Phil; your program makes this easy.

Find/Replace Is Great

If you do the Find on "Camera " (with the space after camera) and Replace with "Camera@" you will get all the speeds at once. Until we get speeds for all the cameras, there might be a false alert on the POIs where the decimal address given by Miss POI is interpreted as a speed. You might have to do another Find/Replace for the decimal point and replace with something other than a number -- don't know whether a simple space will work or not.

C320

I'm a little new at this and have the StreetPilot C320. I haven't used the mentioned files but have created some of my own in CSV format for my local area. I always get the proximity alert (red bar and audible) and also get the audible alert when going over the set speed. So, it may depend on your unit whether it needs to be in GPX or CSV format. If not, perhaps I did something I don't recall to set it up as GPX.
