old topic new user-can't get POI to work

Icons and POI files
I just purchased a Garmin760 and have been struggling with getting the Icons to show up. I have downloaded a couple of files and the associated icons. I matched the file name and the icon name and put all files in a single folder and then run the uploader and then put the poi data on an SD disk. I then went into the Garmin put the SD disk in and selected extras and the waypoints were there but no icons.

I also purchased the redlight cameras and when I drove past cameras that are in the data base i did not receive any notice before hand even when i specified notice 1500 feet before reaching the light when running the downloader.

Any ideas where i am going wrong?????

I don't have a 760

But have you tried loading them to the unit instead of the sd card. It seems I have read they won't work on an SD card..

You shouldn't worry to much about the available space as they GPS should have enough to accommodate the icons. I think there's a size/resolution restrictions on them as well so you should be just fine.

i found that...

... when you have a file like the Red light, it seems to like it being on the unit and not the sd card.

About the icons, you need to be zoomed in quite a bit on the map before you can see them.

The red light camera alerts

The red light camera alerts should work.Make sure you have the alerts turned on for the gps.Go to settings the little wrench at the bottom of the screen and check the alerts settings.

If you have the icons and poi files are named the same except for the extensions your icons can be found by zooming in on the map detail. Some members report the 2d view works better then the 3d but again you have to zoom in real close.

I just checked my units drive..

The poi file is using the least space, voices the most, then mp3's which came on the unit. Vehicles is up there also..

I haven[t worried about space, of 2 gigs I have 524 megs left..

I could do some housekeeping and probably have a gig, but I'm not worried at present.

Still cannot get points of interest to appear

I just read this thread - I cannot even get the points of interest themselves to appear under "Extras." I did the web update, downloaded the most current version of POI loader, and placed all of the poi files within a single folder, did that twice, and still nothing appears in my list...? Any help is appreciated.

Hmmm all the files..

If the files are csv files, do not have double extensions, i.e. poi.csv.csv etc.

How are you loading them?

Run the poi loader with your unit attached,

You want to download the files to a Garmin device. Select Next.

The poi loader should find your device if it is connected and turned on (It normally turns on when you connect the device). After it finds your device, Select next.

Select install custom poi’s onto your device.

Browse to where the files are located..

Select express (recommended) and then select next.

The poi's should load..

Be Aware

If you do this with a non-camera/speed file, don't expect an alert. Alerts must be set in manual mode, unless it is a gpx file.

Just create a main folder on your computer and from that folder make what subfolders you want. Then put the csv files into the correct subfolder.Run poi loader and direct it to the main folder not the subfolders.Once complete it will show number of pois loaded.Go where to on gps,my locations then custom pois or extras and you should see lising of your custom pois.

This is what it should look like on your computer.

My pois=main folder

>>Food=subfolder
>>>McDonalds.csv
>>>BurgerKing.csv

>>Stores=subfolder
>>>Target.csv
>>>WalMart.csv

>>National Parks=subfolder
>>>National Parks.csv

>>Alerts=subfolder
>>>Redlight cameras.csv
>>>Speed cameras.csv

On my Garmin 760 under

On my Garmin 760 under Extras you see a topic titled POIs and you need to touch the screen to actually see the detail files loaded. that may be the step you are missing. I was expecting that I would see the Icons when I toouched the heading POIs but I got just a listing.

I would also like to thank all for the advise you have given. I have loaded directly to the Gps and I will now see if it works.

Loading to SD card

I have a nuvi 350 and always load red light cameras and other POI to the SD card while it is in the unit and have had no problem with alerts. The only problem is that every time you turn on the unit it asks if you want to transfer the data to the unit and I don't know how to turn off that dialog box.

Have You Read This?

Not sure if this solution works on your 350, but have you read this topic?

To avoid reading the entire thread:

If your unit offers no checkbox for "Don't ask me again" on the initial prompt asking whether you want to copy the new data to the Nuvi, you must choose "Yes" (as counter-intuitive as that seems), just to pull up the second prompt that allows you to check a box saying to skip that file for transfer and future prompting. You will be given that option for each new gpi file on the SD card.

If your unit offers the "Don't ask me again" checkbox on the first prompt, check the box and choose "No" to the question of copying the data. You will get this prompt for each new gpi file on the SD card.
