Im touching up the last bits of the update from stuff people have posted here as we speak.

How would I go about updating the existing file?
I know I can update my own POI files easily...but someone else's....im not sure

So it seems the previous maintainer of the Cigar POI file is having computer problems, so I've volunteered to take over till he gets back.

I don't seem to have privileges to update HIS file, so I've created a new one, with stores suggested by users in the original discussion thread ( http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13713 ), and several that I' posted to the Orange County california Metro Project. For now at least, I plan on keeping both going separately - largely because I like having a local metro project, and I also want to have 1 cigar file where I can personally vouche that the stores aren't what is usually referred to as "head shops" - stores that carry a lot of drug related items.

Feel free to suggest new stores, submit corrections, ramble about your favorite cigars, etc..

I'm going to go ahead and run them through GPSVisualizer's Geocoder for now, but the origional posters are defininately welcome to submit readings from their gpsr when they have time.

Well, I normally take my gps to the store itself. My unit is a Garmin Nuvi 760, so the specifics may be specific. I go to the Tools button, then select the "where am I?" option. SHows me the lat/long, etc. that screen has several buttons, including one to "save to favorites". You can either manuyally write down the lat/long, or save to favorites. You'll ahve to have a copy of at least Garmin's Trip and Waypoint manager to later read the lat/long from the unit.

Hey all I am the original poster of this topic and my computer hard drive crashed and I have been without a computer since then. I am using a mac and I cannot seem to figure out how to do .gpx files on here and i also can not figure out how to use the roadtrip application. I can't seem to be able to look anything up on there. I don't know if I will be able to keep up with this file because i am a college student so i don't have a ton of time. if someone could help me out with these problems i may be able to keep up with it.

I love this idea and as I travel a lot, this should come in very handy. The following shops are in the Houston area and are Cigar (& pipe) stores. By pipe, I mean tobacco pipes, not head shops. These are not cigarette stores either, but places that sell quality cigars and have areas where you can sit & smoke & socialize.

Hey Drumm - well - it seems I volunteered to help keep this file up to date till you get back in action. I'm doing an update right now, and I'll make sure I put goood notes in as to what i've done with it.

The Smoke Shop in Quincy, MA has recently closed. I don't know yet if they may have moved, but their old shop is now empty. If I find them, or another shop in that area, I'll post it.

Nomad, I am not sure if that location is in our POI File or not but I went ahead and sent over a note to Skunkape to have him remove it if it is.

Dallas TX is considering banning cigar sales in most places. Seems as though the cigars can become a pot container which I guess disguises it.

Aaah the war on drugs...Hate to get too political here, but sometimes people get really carried away with seemingly well intentioned laws.....

Ya - lot of pot smokers smoke "blunts" - cigars that have been emptied of their normal contents and filled with mary-ja-wana, and usually some of hte cigar tobacco mixed back in too. Covers the smell and disguises the pot - home rolled cigaretes are VERY obvious.

Frankly - for the cigar shops in my area, i HAVE visted each one with my gps, and used the "Where am I?" icon on my garmin. Sometimes geocoding ends up being WAAAY off, not very often but still happens. I have geocoded stuff, but I like to go out and verify the location of stuff when I have the time and energy.

It would sure be nice if there was some way of knowing which B&M's had parking close by for big trucks. I will start a thread for this over at www.socialcigar.com

Looks like Miss POI was kind enough to formally transfer this File to me, and i'm very active now that got off my hind end and got some repairs on my car taken care of, can actually drive now for the first time in about a year, so i'm using my gps for more than just some occasional geocaching...

SO keep them cigar shops coming - and remember - lets try and avoid the "Hookah" shops unless they have a decent humidor with at least a few of the premium brands - MonteCristo, Macanudo, COhiba, and the like...
Swishers and King Edwards and Garcia Y Vega you can get at pretty much any convenience store...

By the way, a big thank you to Miss POI for letting me formally take this project over.

ANd a big thank you to the Drum Master for starting the project.

You may want to fix the Smokers Depot 003 in Ann Arbor POI as the street name is Plymouth.
