Seemless directions from USA to Canada using Nuvi 200

I want to load Canadian street files to the card on my Nuvi 200, then get directions from my location in Michigan, to a town in Canada. Is this possible if the US street file is in the internal memory, and the Canada street file is on the card? Can I get US to Canada directions, or only US to US, Canada to Canada?
I apologize if this has been posted, but I was unable to find this exact answer after searching. Thanks.

Yes you can

As long as both the maps are selected, the Nuvi should give your seamless directions from US to Canada.

.

And as long as the roads in the maps are continuous, you should be fine.

The thing to do, however, is to TEST it by simulating a route BEFORE you go on your trip.

Directions to Canada

I live in Quebec Canada, I have a nuvi 250w and befor that a c330 and the map contain Canada and USA, is it deferent for GPS sold in USA?
If I go to florida or alseware I dont need to load ather maps.....

250 is covered

The 250 has all of North America. I received the 200 as a gift not knowing it was only the lower 48 (the 250 is only $20 more). The 200 sold in Canada has all provinces, and the states up against the provinces. However, with the 250, if you bought in the States or Canada, its the same - full coverage of both nations. I discovered that even if I buy the North American NT update, the coding on my device will only allow the lower 48 to get loaded. I need to spend another $70 above and beyond to get Canada on a sim chip.

200 is regional, 250 is not.

The 250 has all of the US and Canada. The 200 is considered a "regional" unit, so has less flash inside and less maps.

In the USA, the 200 comes with the lower 48 states and P. Rico, but not Canada or Alaska. In Canada, I believe the 200 comes with all of Canada and select Northern USA states. The Southern USA is not loaded.

Cheers,
PT

200 owners can have the equivalent of the 250

200 owners can have the equivalent of the 250 by putting Canada and Alaska on an SD card. They require less than 100 MB.

Canada on after-market card?

Do you need to buy the official Canada card from Garmin, or can a 200 owner, with a 200 key and registration, buy the North American NT 2009 update, put the lower 48 on internal, and put Canada on a store-bought blank SD card? From what I am reading so far, the install process will not allow this without some type of a hack. If it can be done without hacking, I would really like to know. Thanks.

I installed the 2008 North America NT update DVD on my 200.

I installed the 2008 North America NT update DVD on my 200. I installed the US map on the unit and the Canada and Alaska maps on the SD card using MapSource. My nüvi acts no differently than if I had all of North America loaded, as far as I can tell.

Thanks, gdfaini. Exactly what I want to hear. Now I just have to sort through the post about NT 2009 issues to see if I should wait or do it now.

Install over-ride did not work

No luck. I just did the install last night. I had a new blank card in the GPS, but the application never gave me the option to install anything on the card. The install application also never gave me the opportunity to install Canada period.
The thing is, it has my serial number and my product key, so I am not surprised I was given no opportunity to "over ride" the install and grab the Canada data. its giving me what I paid for, so I will live with it. Thanks for the help, anyway.

Add Canadian Provs & Alaska to 200/200W

You have to use Map Source (install the maps onto your computer). Select the Canadian Provs and Alaska, put the SD Card into a card reader and select Transfer/Send To Device in Map Source. Put the card into your 200 and you should find the additions. Just did it with my 200W and all worked well. I just put it on the SD card along with all my Custom POIs. I am using a 512M card I happened to have around. Only uses up about 100M for the maps.

I just installed Map Source. The Canadian provinces are not selectable. It still seems like it knows Lower 48 only.

Hmmmmm

Gosh I have a Garmin C550 and I don't know what all the previous problems have been.

I have read all the posts and just for fun, I have simulated a nice long drive to my late brother's home in La Habra, California from my home near Ottawa, Ontario.

Man, it only took me 44 hours and 27 minutes to drive that 4863kms (3022 miles) too. Wish I COULD do it that fast. LOL

However, it WAS a totally seamless "drive" across the border and through the various States.

Is MY 2009 mapping different from everyone else? Just curious.

Nope. The problem isn't the software, it's the nüvi 200. The 200 is different from other units in that it ONLY comes with the "lower 48" loaded and apparently is coded not to accept the rest of the maps. When you get an unlock code for the maps and that code corresponds to a nüvi 200, the unlock key knows that you are only supposed to get the lower 48. (At least that's what I can garner from reading various posts.)

I'll be getting a 200 free as a promo (it will come eventually) and I'll play with it at that time. I have Mapsource on my PC and the full 2009 map set. I'll just have to wait and see for myself if I can manage to get Alaska and Canada on the unit or the card.

The 200 can accept any maps you send to it. It is only limited to the "Lower 48" states by memory. If you put a 100MB SD card in it you can add the rest of North America (Canada and Alaska).

"Lower 48" is of course a misnomer. That would exclude Maine, but include Hawaii. It is actually the Contiguous 48, plus Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

If you get the 2008 or 2009 Map update on DVD Mapsource will allow you to install any maps you please on the 200. Internally, your choice will be Canada or US. After that, you can put the rest on an SD card.

Dear gd,

Thank you. I deeply appreciate this and cannot resist the impulse to respond. You have made my day.

I prefer the term "malapropism" (a ludicrous misuse of language) to "misnomer." "Malapropism" strikes the nail with a heavier sledgehammer.

When I call the carrier for my mobile, the representative asks for my "PIN Number"; I, of course, have to tell her/him that I do not have a "PIN Number" but I do have a "PI Number" and could provide it if she/he wishes. Sometimes the representative will ask to "verify your address" and I have to tell her/him that I cannot do that but am able to tell her/him where I live and she/he can then verify whether that information conforms with my record in the company's files. All of this is naturally delivered with a friendly smile in my voice.

If more of us do this, perhaps the message will arrive. In any event, none of us should accept being made a party to the crime of desecrating the mother tongue and any coercion must be rejected.

Then there is the "all-new episode." This, of course, exists to differentiate from the partially new episode where footage of the original Star Trek was used in an episode of one of the later versions -- TNG, I believe.

I am most grateful for your contribution to my munitions.

Your brother in deep appreciation of language, david

Malapropism:
1. an act or habit of misusing words ridiculously, esp. by the confusion of words that are similar in sound.
2. an instance of this, as in “Lead the way and we'll precede.”

I would like to use it accrually.... shock

And thank you, Mrs. Malaprop!

A couple of snippets from http://www.fun-with-words.com/mala_malapropisms.html

This is true only if you have unlock codes for the full mapset. The code that comes with the free upgrade for Nüvi 200 and 200W unlocks only the lower 48 so that Canada and Alaska are not selectable. The upgrade DVD will work if you acquire a code to unlock the full set. (Which is why my maps of Canada are still 2008.)
