660 POI GPI file and Proximity Points alert help.

I recently tried to add the proximity alert file from the GPS tips, tricks and work arounds on my 660. Needless to say I could not get the process to work and kept showing my redlight alert showing on my POIs. I tried to remove the file but was unsecessful in removing off my 660(I did remove it later). I accessed the POI GPI in my garmin and tried to open it with the notebook. This changed the file icon and now I can not change it back to the original icon. redface How can I change it back? Can I get a file to replace it? Or does it matter?
Also, I have a Proximity Points alert on my 660 have it turned on, audio also, but do not receive any type of notifications. I have not tried to use this feature until about a month ago and can not get it to work. confused Any helpful suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

You can't edit a GPI file with Notepad. If you really want to edit it, you might try GPSBabel, but to me, it's just easier to reload the data.

The file icon that shows on your computer doesn't affect the way that the file works on your GPS unit. It doesn't matter. If you want to change, however, you would go to the File Associations on your computer.

Did you SET an alert when you loaded the Custom POIs? Regular Custom POIs don't alert by default. The redlight camera should alert you at 1/4 mile as long as the word "redlight" is in the filename.

You must set an alert if you want an alert to sound. You can run POI Loader in Manual Mode and set whatever alerts you want. Or you can put some alert information in the files themselves.

Check out Phil's great guide for more information about alerts.

You can set alerts in a variety of ways.

If you run POI Loader in Manual Mode instead of Express Mode, you can set whatever alerts you wish.

It's important to understand how the proximity alerts work on Garmin auto units.

The alerts do NOT function as a radius, but rather they function as an "along the road/route" alert.

In order to get an alert several things must be true.

1. You must set an alert either through information in the file or via POI Loader being run in Manual Mode and an alert being manually entered.

2. Alerts must be enabled on your unit.

3. You must be traveling on the road on which the POI is located and traveling in the direction of the POI.

4. The POI must be sufficiently close to the road (typically 50 feet or less).

Mama, thanks for your help

I think it's safe to say that one should be fairly computer savvy before they start to mess with these types of files and settings. Not everyone has the same experience level which can get you into trouble if not careful.
Just a general observation....

Thanks again for those of you with helpful information. Observations were not part of the question.

use POI loader

Garmin provides POI loader for free, just read the help file patiently, it explains everything. I didn't know anything before setting out to do it, but did it by just following the steps.
