Routing algorithm on Garmin

Does anyone know whether the routing algorithm for the Garmins' resides in the maps? I was comparing the routing offered by NT 2008 & NT 2009 and notice minor differences in the routing.

I recall reading somewhere that upgrades to 2009 maps has resulted in some changes to routing - not always better though.

I do not believe the routing algorithm is in the maps, however the map data does affect the route in that new roads, changed data on roads, etc. will change the shortest distance or fastest time.

The roads on this specific

The roads on this specific route exist on both 2008 and 2009 - which is why I wonder if the routing algorithm is built into the maps. In this particular instance the 2008 routing is more efficient than the 2009 one.

I believe the type of road

I believe the type of road makes a difference. Perhaps Garmin had listed last year that one of those roads was lesser traveled or a smaller road but now is showing it as a "major" roadway or something. Since it may believe that the roadway is larger, it may assume the speed limit is higher.

Or, perhaps the types of roadways it intersects with are larger / smaller and it could make an assumption of a quicker or slower commuute through a given area.

Just guesses though.
