Total Nuvi Format

Just curious as to whether anyone has ever deleted ALL the Nuvi folders/files, maybe even reformated their Nuvi drive, and then of course reload from their saved backup. I have deleted unneeded voice/help files etc,in the past, but can you go down to Bare-Bones with what we think is the full saved original image just like when it was new??? I am worried that it would not be the same as an " INSTALL" The reason for this was should I ever wish to give or sell it to someone else as it was when it was purchased.

Formating Drive

First of all the Nuvi drive is a RAM drive not a hard drive, So there is no need to defrag it. Also what changes are you making to the files that would need to be undone? Probably only firmware updates. Which you would probably want to keep anyway. You can always put the unused voice, help, etc. files back in to sell it.

Wanted to address if anyone had cleared it all and re-copied the files back. That was all.......I used the term format so you'd understand it was totally cleared.

To My Knowledge, Only One

Only one forum member, to my knowledge, has done it - asianfire (Charlie).

Read this topic. It contains a dire warning from Garmin against doing it, some think, overstated.

All of the above.

Correct - it's not. Some parts of the unit are not accessible via the file system. Some firmware updates (things like Sirf) are not reversible. There is no actual way (that I've found) of doing a true Factory Reset.

One particular thing to watch out for, is the unlock code contained in GMAPPROM.UNL. When shipped, this file is no longer present - but it was at one point. Its contents have been read and stored somewhere else. Occasionally, firmware downgrades and other such messing, require this file to be re-read. If it's not there, you get messages such as "No detailed maps found"...and a (temporarily) non-functional unit. You can induce this at will on a Streetpilot C5xx ... but the Nüvi 7xx has a bit of a history of it as well!.

Of course, getting yourself out of these messes is how you learn wink
