Bluetooth problem & questions

On my Nuvi 660, I successfully paired my Motorola Razr and made calls, both incoming and outgoing, even using voice dial. Then when I came back to the car the 3rd time, no phone. Had to re-pair the phone to the Nuvi. Is this normal? Anyway to avoid this problem?

Also, the sound quality in is fine...very loud and I can hear fine. But the quality out is very poor and folks complain about noise. Is there a way to improve this? Buy an external mike?

I've got the Nuvi on a friction mount on the dash.

Thanks.

Same help needed

I don't have any problems with pairing, but I also get compaints on the mic quality and would like to hear how others are doing and if an external mic would make a significant improvement?
Thanks,

Garmin needs to apply a

Garmin needs to apply a patch for the Bluetooth Enabled Garmin Series. My 760 is an awesome unit but to top it off with 2 thumbs up Bluetooth needs major improvements in Clarity and Connectivity

.

To the OP, what version Razr. The older Razrs had a very weak Bluetooth.

As to sound quality, an external microphone might work. You might also try moving the unit closer to you if possible.

It's a Motrazor Maxx VE on

It's a Motrazor Maxx VE on Verizon. Seems to work well when it's paired and it paired right away as opposed to pairing my wife's Samsung which also dropped pairing the next day.

Can you tell if the pairing is lost on the phone or the GPSr? Which device is not remembering who?

If I remember correctly, Verizon's Motorola ROMs automatically switch Bluetooth to "non-discoverable" after a few minutes. Depending on if you are initiating the connection from the GPS or from the phone, you might want to check that both are discoverable when you attempt to link up.

Not much that could be done on the other issues, though - Verizon is known to cripple Bluetooth services and is very slow when it comes to release updates, so there may be unaddressed bugs in the Bluetooth stack for this model.

External Mic-POOR

As you can see I have the Nuvi 760. My overall BT operation is fair at best( Verizon also). Lots of complaints on my end, the incoming voices are just fine thru my speakers. I thought that an external mic was the ticket and bougth the one sold by Garmin( BestBuy-$15) which plugs into the little hole on the left side of the mount. There was no change in the quality, returned it and later tried some similar stuff from RadioShack. That too was returned as I was unable to determine any change of any value whatsoever.

Covered the Mic

I bought an external mic, and took a foam piece from an old pair of headphones to make a wind screen. That seems to have helped quite a bit in improving the quality of my voice over the bluetooth.

As to which is loosing sync,

As to which is loosing sync, I don't know. The phone remembers the Nuvi but evidently the Garmin does not. If I put the garmin in discover mode, and then turn the phone bluetooth off and then on again, it picks it up.

I like the idea of the foam mic rest and I might try that. Maybe a bit of velcro to hold things in place lower down than the top of the dash. I'll have to experiment. Rick, where did you mount the mic?

Similar Issue

My Treo and 760 seem to loose intrest in one another constantly as I'm driving. I frequently look to the Nuvi to see the message that the "phone is disconnnected."

I updated the BT verson on the Nuvi. Now I'm looking at Palm's web site. They have an update, but it requires the sync cable, which I'm sure is $50 or some such amount. Looking to IT to buy one for the company wink

NUVI MIC

I just bought the MIC today at a local Frys store. big disappointment. major echoe and not a single improvement. Gonna return it ..

External Microphone

I bought the Garmin external microphone but just installed it today and haven't used it yet. It's not all that expensive and can't be any worse than the sound without the thing. I mounted it on the side rail or whatever it's called between the door and the windshield so that it's up around forehead height and pointed down toward my mouth. The cable hid nicely under the trim - at least where it came up from the dash to the microphone. I'll have to experiment with it a bit.

I did lose sync between my Samsung ach-930 phone (Verizon) and the Nuvi after the first day but I re-established contact and, so far, it's held. I did update the Nuvi after I lost sync the first time. Hopefully it won't forget again.

I should be getting a Blackberry from work in the next couple of weeks (Verizon one more time since that's what the state is using) and I'll see how it goes with that.

760 MIC

After doin some testing came to a conclusion that a Plantronics Ringer Microphone is more reliable than any other external mics ive tried. Since i bought the Garmin external mic the other day, called the wife and to see what she thought of it. Replies " Are you in a tunnel ", lol. I then remembered that i had ringer microphone from my Plantronics wireless headset w/2.5 mm jack. Driving home from work the wife calls and was surprise and asked that hearing my voice through NUVI 760 mic was more crisp n clear. So far so good.

Ringer microphone?

Wait........... do you mean the little mic that comes with some headsets and is supposed to sit against the telephone to pick up the ring? I have one of those somewhere....... I think it had a pretty short cord though - especially compared to the really long cord on the Garmin mic.

Here's an update on my

Here's an update on my research on bluetooth connectivity--I've noticed that it takes some time for the phone to reconnect to the Nuvi. A bit of patience seems helpful and then the phone icon pops up on the Nuvi. Hope this continues.

Now here's another related question...What if both my wife and I each are in the car with our cell phones on, both having been connected to the Nuvi? Do both sync, only the first? Just wondering.

Excellent question. I've been wondering what will happen when work buys me a Blackberry. Will my personal phone and the Blackberry both sync or will I have to choose one or the other?

Plantronics Speakerphone Mic

Thrax, yes that mic that attaches to the phone lifter. The cord is short but that little mic is pretty sensitive and picks up every voice detail from my NUVI 760 w/out any distortion

.

The GPS unit can only pair with a single phone at one time.

If both are in the profile, it will first attempt to pair with the one that was last paired.

Ah hah...thanks.

Pairing Blue Tooth

I had the same problem pairing my Sanyo with my nuvi 660. Then I discovered in the phone settings under bluetooth, that there was an option to be always visible. Once I chose that option, I had no other problems with my nuvi dropping the pairing.

Where's that setting?

Was that setting on your phone or on the Nuvi?

Only pairing with a single device.......

That's the answer I expected but it is unfortunate. I have a personal cell phone and my department is purchasing a Blackberry for me to use at work. It would be great if I had the hands free capability of the bluetooth in the nüvi for both devices since, when I'm on the road, I'll need to have both of them. (The state will monitor the usage time of the Blackberry.)
