So the general consensus is you cant download 2009 mapping for US?

I did a search but can't seem to find the thread, but didn't many of the POI folks agree that new mapping would not or could not be downloaded off the Garmin site via the internet?

Hummmm, we shall have to wait and see if this becomes possible:) I would think that if you had NOT acquired satellites prior to March 1 (only guessing on the date here), you might just get a free update download.

since this is a DVD product

since this is a DVD product consisting of MANY gigs, I don't think they'd want to pay the bandwidth bill. I also don't think too many of us would have the "patients" to download it.

Doubtful

I agree that it would be nice, but doubt that Garmin would make it available as a download. in addition to the bandwidth, it also opens them up to the potential for un-authorized downloads. I think by sending it as a DVD they have much more control.

Actually

Actually most such downloads are linked to the unit. You run Web Updater and it only works when the unit is connected to your PC. It checks the ID number of your unit and then looks for updates for that specific unit. The unlock codes are also linked to the unit serial number. They make as difficult as possible to pirate their software.... maybe not impossible, but hard enough that most wouldn't think it worth the effort to try.

Even with a cable connection, it would take me a finite amount of time to download a couple of gigs, and if you have a file this large released on a certain date, the rush to be first in line could easily overload and shut down the server. It's not like the unit will fail if it doesn't get the update immediately. Getting it on DVD just makes sense for something like this... then you have it in a form that is reinstallable if necessary at a later date.

I just logged into 'My Garmin' account. A new option has appeared - it's called myMaps...

One of the sub-options is

Map Downloads
Download recently purchased maps

I just downloaded it. It took about an hour. I think thats much faster than waiting for the DVD that will take 3-4 days.

Download

I'll be interested to download it tonight. Does it download to your computer and then you install it on the GPS unit, or does it update directly to the unit? Thanks for the post!

Download

It appears to download the file to your computer and then you install it on the GPS. My download is in process and should complete sometime tonight...

2009 Map Update

I'm a new purchaser. Logged in to 'My Garmin' on the Garmin site, and then clicked on map updates. Gives you a choice of ordering the disk (4-6 weeks)-- it would be good to have it on disk or downloading. Download in progress, should take about 1 hour at 5 mbps.

Should get disk in 7-10 Days, not 4-6 weeks

I ordered my disk today and it's only 7-10 business days by UPS. Dont' know where you read 4-6 weeks. I'm not traveling anywhere soon, so I'll wait for the week or so, no big deal.

I agree with Frainc, 7-10 days

I just ordered my map update today as well. They have a turn around time at the longest of 7-10 business days. They indicate that they get the disk out to retail first which is why there is a delay.

When its all said and done.....

Did your download include MapSource?

Yes, but did the download include MapSource? Or did you have MapSource already? That would affect the download vs DVD purchase decision for many users.

Download

As was asked earlier - do we know if the downloaded file is serial number specific and can it be loaded more than once to the unit? Like the dvd if for some reason I need to reinstall my maps because of user error?

It should allow you to reload the GPS.

Just go to the MyGarmin >> MyMaps >> ManageMaps and copy the Product code and unlock code.

You might need them to reload.

Them just double click the downloaded file and see what happens.

Loading 2009 Update More than Once

I have MapSource on my Desktop (easier to work with) and on my Laptop (for when I am on long trips). I first used the NT2009 upgrade DVD to update my Nuvi 750 and MapSource on my Desktop. It worked, but since I also wanted to use the 2009 maps with MapSource on my Laptop, I just repeated the whole process with the Nuvi now attached to it. It seems to be a bit silly (and takes more time) to have to load the map onto the GPS again (when it's already there) just to upgrade MapSource on the second computer, but it worked (and shows you can reload the map again later onto the same GPS). I think I may have since seen a reference to a way (probably easier and much faster) to use the DVD to update MapSource on a PC without copying the files to the GPS, but my way did work.

I have downloaded the update

I have downloaded the update (at 25K took 24hrs but free) snail speed and the Mapsource update was included. I had Mapsource before so am not sure if a new program is there but the update is great! My prior version did not have POIs.

Reload Maps

Ok thanks. Will be looking into it closer.
