A Long Way to the Airport

I was in New Orleans on Tuesday and rented a car from a different company than I normally do. Since I had a 6:30am flight the next day, I used my C340 and saved the rental company as a favorite. Then I headed off on my mini-trip.

Spent the night in downtown NO and got up too early the next day to head back to the airport and return the car. Entered the saved location and took off. After a couple of miles, things didn't seem right. It had me headed in the wrong direction and the next turn was in 32 miles! I thought that was a bit far, so I pulled up the saved location in my favorites and it said the rental location was 663 miles away! My first thought was, "I'll never make my 6:30 flight", then I decided something was wrong (no coffee yet and the brain was working a bit slow). I changed the unit to go to the airport, then had it look for car rentals near the airport. This time it was only about 20 miles away.

Not sure how it saved the location so badly. Haven't had a chance to go back and look at where it actually had the location at. My guess is that I saved it before it had acquired the satellites and it thought it was still in Ft Lauderdale.

At least I made it to the airport and got back to Dallas in time. Maybe the gps knew I really wanted to spend more time in Florida?

I plan to live forever. So far, so good.

Coffee?

Maybe you better get a strong coffee for your GPSr next time too! grin

Bird spotting...

The only thing I can think of...is that the satellites were not set yet and the unit thought you were still at your original destination...When I get off the plane I usually turn on right after we touchdown..that way during the taxi the birds usually find me and by the time I get to the rental car place I have a strong signal!

It's those changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes nothing remains quite the same. With all of our running and all of our cunning, If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane.

good call. people don't

good call. people don't realize that moving over a great distance greatly affects the satellite reception until a signal is acquired.

similar story

samething happened to me on a recent trip to MD. Had a business meeting that was about 20 minutes away ... pulled up the address and my Nuvi said that I had over 1.5 hrs.!!

realized that I had not yet achieved sat. recept.. Once sats. can in, it recalculated and told me I was 19 minutes away!
