The v2009 map update has just been released in the last few weeks, so it's unlikely that a unit purchased in December 2007 will have that map version.

You can check your map version by going to Settings > Map > Map Info

If you have previous version (v7, v8, or v2008) and if you wish to update the maps, then you will need to purchase the update DVD.

Be aware that that model does not have enough space to load the entire update. You will have to choose between the lower 48 US states or Canada.

I asked Garmin about the 2009 maps fitting on the c340 and below is the answer I received but being a little skeptic I will save judgement until I purchase the update instead of the full map download.

when you consider buying updated maps consider where you use the unit and if the road contruction, neighborhoods etc is fairly stable where you travel. in high growth areas the updates are more valuable however they will still be about 2 years behind the construction.

Actually the 2008 update fit completely on my c340. It seemed to be an issue on the c330 though.

I own both units, the C330 and C340.
The C330 had to have 2008NT split between Unit and SD card while the 2008NT loaded completely on the C340 itself !
