Mapsource files on Nuvi?

First post here, so go easy on me. I have uploaded a few Mapsource files from my laptop onto my Nuvi, but I can't find them on the unit itself, I can't even find a place on the Nuvi to access these files. Am I doing something wrong or is this just not possible on the Nuvi?
I have successfully uploaded several POI's and am getting familier with those, but can't find the maps.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
JC

New myself

The first thing you will be asked is what model nuvi you have. I have a 360 and you can't do routes on it. Some models of nuvi you can. Welcome to the site.

Favorites

Maybe it is saved under Favorites. Anytime I place something on my Nuvi 200 it is placed there.

What maps are you talking about?

The Garmin 200 comes preloaded with lower 48 states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. And this is all the areas that should be available from MapSource. With the exception you might have purchased TOPO or BLUEWATER ext. Are you trying to make smaller maps from the large map? If this is what you are trying to do it wont work. The GMAPSUPP.IMG file will be built and loaded into your 200 but the main map GMAPPROM.IMG overrides the supplemental map (MADE FROM THE ORIGINAL MAP).
If you loaded other maps such as TOPO, BBLUEWATER etc these would go into the supplemental map GMAPSUPP.IMG and they can be be selected from the MAP INFO page on your unit.

So just what maps are you referring too?

TOPO / Blue Water

Are you able to select and use the TOPO and City Nav US maps together at the same time or can you only select one at a time? Just curious if you can still do things like search for a restaurant while in TOPO that's just outside of the TOPO map or if you have to switch it back over to City Nav?

Viewing Multiple Maps

PaulATL,

Not sure about the TOPO and or BlueWater maps.

But with the Philippines map loaded along with CNNA NT map on my 750 I can view both if both BOXES are selected TOOLS-SETTINGS-MAP-MAP INFO page.

I have Topo USA loaded on a SD card in my nuvi 750. By default, both maps are selected the first time you power up the nuvi after inserting the Topo SD card. But the only map seen is City Navigator. To see the Topo, you need to turn off the City Map (Wrench/Settings/Map/MapInfo, then uncheck City Navigator). With Topo showing, there is no ability to plan a route by road, search for restaurants, etc.

I stand by this...until corrected by someone more knowledgable...

.

You are correct, Craig.

Thanks

Thanks for that info. I do have a follow up question but since it is getting off the subject thread I will start a new one.

Craig, Note that you can

Craig,

Note that you can create a route with the NT Map then disable it and enable to Topo map. The Nuvi will remember the route on the Topo map. Just don't go off course since will need to switch back to the NT map to recalculate the route.

With the Topo map just hearing "recalculating" sends shivers down my spine.

Thanks, that's good to know. I just checked and it does work as you say. It's lucky for me that both City Navigator and Topo USA have most Forest Service Roads built into their maps.

Speaking of Topo and "recalculating", I have a similar 'shiver' story even when using only the City Navigator map. I was heading to a custom Saved location on my nuvi, a trailhead for a National Forest hiking trail, which *is* accessible by road. I asked Karen to direct me from home to the trailhead and she offered a route that would have me driving vertically down an 1100' rock cliff. There's not even a hiking trail let alone a Forest Road on her suggested route. Luckily I knew that and once I passed her suggested turn off, her recalculated route did get me to my trailhead safely and by the route I expected. But then, Karen's first suggested "route" was a *lot* shorter than the all-road route--if only my car and I would survive the trip!

NUVI file priority

If you have more than one map set on the NUVI, the factory installed one, gmapprom.img always takes priority unless you turn it off. However, if you have a US City Navigator map and you are physically located elsewhere, like Europe, you'd see your installed supplemental map gmapsupp.img for Europe. It's a little confusing.

Here is someting Garmin doesn't tell you... Let's say you install a supplemental map of a country in Europe on the NUVI and want to keep it around all the time... you can rename it from gmapsupp.img to gmapprom1.img (note the "1") and it won't get overwritten next time you upload maps from Mapsource!

I have the Nuvi 200, the basic model I believe.
I'm guessing I can't do routes, because I just can't find them. I can upload them ok via Mapsource, but can't locate them.
All my POI's are there, but no routes.
Thanks again.
