Found a missing Rest Area in Combined Rest Area File

I found a rest area on a recent trip that is not in the Combined Rest Area file. (It is the South Carolina Welcome Center and Rest Area on I-85 North as you leave Georgia and enter South Carolina). How should I report this so that it can be added to the Combined Rest Area File? Do you need the Lat and Lon coordinates?

I will research the rest area and include in the Rest Areas Combined for the next update !

The subject Rest Area

The subject Rest Area on I-85 NB was already in the latest file available on POI Factory dtd 3/27/08

I have included the parameters shown in the file which is on POI Factory website.

-83.027127,34.485227,"WELCOME CENTER NB I-85 MM0.5","RR, PT, VM, Pets, HF"

Interesting. My GPS did not alert as I approached the Rest Area and I have the 3/27/08 version of the file. Now my GPS POI editor for the Magellan 3225 requires that each POI have a unique name. Is it at all possible that there is more than one POI in the file with the name "WELCOME CENTER NB I-85 MM0.5"? If so, that might be my problem!

Duplicate Names within a POI File are a problem for Magellan

I'm guessing that you already know that there are two different POIs with that exact name. The Magellan POI File Editor requirement for unique POI names was posted by JM in thread http://www.poi-factory.com/node/901 back in 1/12/07:

With the Magellan POI File Editor I'm using (2.00.01), I've found that the values in the name field must be unique. Records with duplicate name values seem to be dropped when the file is saved.

You can edit the csv file before importing it into Magellan's editor. If you're handy with Excel, you can use a formula to append a sequential number and then save as CSV again.

While sorting to check this out, I noticed that there are other duplicated names as well, such as:

WELCOME CENTER EB I-40 MM10
WELCOME CENTER NB I-77 MM1
WELCOME CENTER EB I-10 MM 1

If the reason is not obvious, it is because our interstate highways start over at zero every time you cross a state line.

The Subject Rest Area

Yep. Duplicate POI names was the problem. It is exacerbated by the fact that the Magellan POI editor truncates fields at 35 characters. So, I had to concatenate a unique number at the BEGINNING of the name field rather than the end as some of the names in the file are at or over 35 characters. I used the "&" (concatenate) function in Excel. Now my POI names in the file look like: "1-Rest Area.......", "2-Rest Area ......", etc. Thank you for the information. I hope this helps others. Maybe MrKenFL will update the CombindedRestArea file to make each Rest Area name absolutely unique within the first 35 characters.
Thanks again.
