Question about Garmin 660 and City Navigator NT v.8

Ok so I'm new and have a few basic questions.

Please help.

I purchased a Garmin 660 with City Navigator NT v.8 preloaded around April 7th. It did not come with a disc other than the manual. I have looked at the files inside the 660 and see no .map files, etc. I have downloaded the latest MapSource and installed.
1. Wheres the map files?
2. How do I get the map files for MapSource which will not boot up because it says it cannot find the map files.
3. Will I possibly be eligible to get 2009 maps files from Garmin free?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The latest 2008 maps are

The latest 2008 maps are City Navigator North America nt 2008.You will need to get the disk for map source from Garmin if they still have them.A lot of us got it free to manage our favorites and other reasons if we were within the time limit of purchase. You should get the 2009 maps free since you just got the unit.Make sure you go to Garmin site and register your unit. The process is that they will email you about the maps.I would email or call Garmin about the mapsource disk and be prepare to tell them why you want it. See this thread http://www.poi-factory.com/node/643. If you only got the start up manual for your unit you can download the owners manual at https://buy.garmin.com/shop/store/manual.jsp?product=010-005...

Charlie. Nuvi 265 WT and Nuvi 2597 LMT. MapFactor Navigator - Offline Maps & GPS.

.

1. Map files have the extension "*.img" normally located under "F:\Garmin" folder.
2. You can't copy maps from the unit to get Mapsource to work. Instead, you have to call Garmin to get Mapsource DVD from which you can install Mapsource and maps on your PC. You can get this dvd for free. The file you downloaded from Garmin's web-site is a Mapsource update "not the full program", that is why it is not working properly.
3. Someone mentioned here that a Garmin customer support mentioned that units purchased after March 1 will be eligible for 2009 free update.

You should be good to go

Jer,
If you get the map update to 2009, and I suspect you will, you will have everything you need. I'd wait until Garmin announces that the update is shipping, and then register. At that time it should tell you whether you qualify for the update and they ship quickly. If you register now, I don't think it will tell you whether you are getting it and you won't know until you are notified or it shows up in the mail.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.
