Just wondering if there's any way to specify how much of the voice prompts I want on the Garmin. Mine seems to do a little too much talking and would rather have it only talk when I get REALLY close to a turn, instead of 1 mile, .8 mile, etc. Sorry but I just got my first Garmin and am very new.
sorry
It is all or nothing, the extra talking is so you get in the proper lane with plenty of time before the turn.

What I do on my Magellan is, I lower the Volume on the Gps. Turn up the stereo in the vehicle, and drive. However I have been known to just hit Mute.

Just mute it until you get into unfamiliar territory. I've done that too. Although it doesn't bother me, my wife really hates it. I really don't need to have Jill tell me how to get out of my neighborhood anyway...

That's one of the things I like about my Quest, there's a volume know on the dc plug, so it's very easy to adjust the volume.
lower volume
I just turn my volume down

One option is to slide the on/off switch to the Lock position until the voice prompts are needed again. Doing so will stop any sounds.
