You like csv files for your POIs, but would like to specify proximity for them?

If you like the simplicity of maintaining your POIs in CSV files, but wish you could easily specify proximity alerts on them, please read on.
Even though POI Loader doesn't support proximity on CSV files, this workaround comes close to it, here is how:
1. Update your POIs in CSV as usual, but specify the proximity (in meters) in the 5th parameter. POI Loader is not bothered by extra parameters if you were to Load it like that, but will ignore the 5th parameter.
2. Use dr5274's very nice script (POIConverter.js) to do a quick and simple conversion from the CSV file to a GPX type file.
3. Use POI Loader to load the generated GPX file (not the CSV one!), which will include the proper XML tags for proximity.
4. That's it!
For any further updates to your POI file, do it from the CSV (your source) file and repeat the above steps.
This same script can be used to convert GPX files, like Garmin's current.gpx to a CSV file, so that way you can easily cut and paste anything that you might want to move from your Favorites to your CSV POI files, by converting from GPX to CSV first. This is specially handy with the recent Google maps addition to send addresses directly to the Favorites in your Garmin.
dr5274's script can be found at: http://dr5274.googlepages.com/poiconverter
This is working very well for me.

All my POI files
Even though POI Loader doesn't support proximity on CSV files, this workaround comes close to it, here is how:
All my POI files are in .csv format and I have set proximity alerts for every one of them with the Garmin POI Loader. And they all work.

Just another option

MrKenFL, you are right, if you want the same proximity for all the entries, but if you want it selectively for different entries, and a different values, then the process above can help.
I also like to load my POI in what I call the "express" mode.

Ken, can you give a quick working example of setting a proximity alert using your technique?
Thx.

re: Ken can you give a quick
Yeah, please give a quick example...
Use separate subfolders for each category
I use POI Loader from Garmin in the manual mode.
I set individual distance or speed proximity alerts for each subfolder
IE:
RestAreasCombined 5500 ft
Amtrak Stations 2500 ft
Restaurants
>Applebees 2500 ft
>CrackerBarrel 4000 ft
>Woody'sBBQ 1500 ft
TravelCenters
>Loves 7000 ft
>FlyingJ 7000 ft
>TA 7000 ft

I DO THE SAME manual mode poi loader, set each just like you works GREAT!
Everyday is a GREAT day :)
OK, thanks, Ken. I'm
OK, thanks, Ken. I'm familiar with that technique. I find it becomes very tedious to have to click next so many times as I have (too) many POIs loaded.
I'll play with it when I have a bit of time to dedicate.

What if you don't want proximitys
I do mine in open office and I keep getting short proximity and speed and I don't want them how do I get rid of them?

Don't put any number in the filename, or POI name
ag9900, if you don't want proximity or speed alerts, the key is NOT to use any number in the file name, or the name of the POI. Any number in there will be interpreted as a speed alert.
