Edit a Poi = Way off course.... I'm stumped !!!!

Hi Peeps,

I have a weird issue. I downloaded some POI's, and loaded them into my Magellan Maestro 3140. I thought I'd check them out by taking a drive. I first thought I'd hit up Tim Hortons for a Coffee. So I loaded up the file and followed the GPS's instructions. It turns out, I shot past Tim's by a 1/4 mile when I was told "You Have Arrived"? No big deal. I drove back into the parking lot of Tim Hortons, and stopped the car. I checked out the Long and Lat on my GPS and marked it down. I then went home and punched up Google Earth. I plotted the exact position I was at in the parking lot, and it showed the same settings my GPS reported. I was happy with my results, so I opened up Magellan's POI Editor on my computer. I edited the Lat and Long setting for our local Tim Hortons. I saved it on my memory card, and loaded the file up. Now my GPS says, the closest Tim's is 58km's away. For a little extra topping on the cake, it's not in town anymore.

Is there something I did wrong?

The settings are 49.4711.70
-92.4834.68

655 Government road
Dryden, Ontario

Any Idea's ??

I am stumped too.

Ok now there are two of us that are stumped. When I took a look at the original coordinates in the file in google Earth it looks like it is right where the restaurant building is.

However when I put in the address it is at the following coordinates: 49.7858 -92.8073 and it looks to be in the middle of a area where there are no buildings.

Miss POI

Exactly !!! My GPS also

Exactly !!! My GPS also tells me, it's 58 km's away..

Miss POI

It could be because neither of you have filed the income tax for 2007, untill you do the satellites will route you to incoreect coordinates.

Four days left to correct this situation...hehehe

Taxes

A while back a friend asked me if the GPS service was free or did he have to pay like with his cell phone.

My reply was that it is not free, and unlike the cell phone you have to pay whether you use it or not.

I think that you are mixing coordinate formats. There are no valid coordinate formats for latitude and longitude that have two separate decimal places like that.

Here's what I got from Google and GPS Visualizer.

Tim Hortons

Address 655 Government St

ZIP/Postcode P8N

Latitude 49.786388
Longitude -92.818064

Coordinates

N49°47.18328, W092°49.08384
+49° 47' 11.00", -92° 49' 5.03"

Here's what I got from Mapsource

49.47173 -92.49067

It would be great if you could check out each of the coordinates we gave you to see what software is reporting it the best.

This is the coordinate I'm

This is the coordinate I'm trying to fix. The one you linked too.

The plotted point on that link is incorrect. I'm trying to plot the location, but in the correct spot. The correct spot is to the far right of the map you linked. Right where you see the Hwy 17 logo. Above it, you will see a small dead end road. That is the entrance to Tim Hortons. This is the location I'm trying to save as a POI.

I have it fixed now, the coordinates you wanted were:
49.7863 -92.8102

I have it fixed in the file and uploaded to the site, thanks for this fix.

Miss POI

Great!! That looks correct

Great!! That looks correct on Google Earth. What confuses me is, I was parked about 30 ft from the position you plotted and my GPS marked 49.4710, -92.4837. How is my GPS so far off from your coordinates? What am I, or my GPS doing wrong?

Magellan Maestro 3140

Most likely latitude and longitude are entered in reverse order

Although coordinates entered as 49.7858,92.8073 will allow the .cvs, POI to load and will result in a loctaion, it will not be accurate.

To get the correct reading in a .cvs file the cooridanates have to be entered in the following manner -92.8073,49.7858.

I'm not sure this helps you or not..

My problem isn't entering

My problem isn't entering the values into my POI Loader. I am doing this correctly.

It's just the cordinates are way off, and I don't know why?

I entered the values from Miss POI into my GPS, and it fixed everything. I just wanna know, how she came up with those values.

My Gps told me -92.4837 W and 49.4710 N. These values compared to Her's("That Work"), are way off compared to mine.

Did she use anything special to calculate those numbers?

I just would like to know, so I might be able to update other POI files for others on the site.

Another posibility...

Could be the difference between the official address and the physical location of the place. This happens in places in a larger commercial area, where the address marker at the street can be quite a distance from the establishment.

Also, I don't know how the map programs calculate the location of the street address, but quite often it won't be exactly where you would expect it. Street numbers are not always equally distributed in a block.

Is your GPS set to show you

Is your GPS set to show you coords in this format?
-92.4837 49.4710

or something like this one?
-92 48 37 W and 49 47 10 N

The reason I ask is if I convert the above coordinates to decimal degrees, I get -92.810277 49.786111 which is real close to the coords Ms POI came up with.

Bingo!! How do you convert to decimal degrees?

If you could tell me this, I would be Very Greatful...

Mmmm....which model "loader" are you talking about?
Using the Maestro "Editor", the Latitude column comes first but they are plainly labeled so that shouldn't be a problem.

snapmando wrote:

With all due respect, there is no such thing as a "Maestro Loader". Refering to the POI Editor as such can confuse an otherwise simple discussion.

If you are talking about the file conversion wizard that pops up when you load a .csv file, then which data column comes first is dependent on how the original author built the file.

Longitude is usually first in the .csv files here because they are built by Garmin users and the Garmins can read the .csv files directly so they need to be in that order.

Be designating the columns properly with the Editor input wizzard, it will flip them around and put Lattitude first.......as you should see on the screen once the file is read in to the editor.

GE can be set for Decimal

Just go to Tools/Options and look for ShowLat/Long and set to Decimal Degrees. Voila! C'est tout fini!
