I just got the new maps, but I am having problems intalling it on my nuvi 250w. When I go to install it, it says there is not enough room. How do I delete the 2008 map off. I have deselected it on the unit but I am unsure of how to delete it using mapsource.
.
ABSOLUTELY NOT DELETE YOUR OLD MAP!
It needs to be there for the update to work.
First thing to do is to backup your ENTIRE nuvi drive by copying it to your computer hard drive.
Then you can safely delete any voice and vehicle files that you don't need from the nuvi. They take up a lot of space.
Then you should be able to install the update.
In order to install the new maps, you need to run the install program and allow it to overwrite your old maps. You do not install the update through MapSource.
How do I delete the 2008 map off.
Call garmin tech they will be happy to help you and walk you through it phone # 1-800-800-1020.

Updateing Maps 2008NT to 2009NT
It seems there are 2 versions of City Navigator North America NT (THE WHOLE THING) and the one to be used for UPDATING.
Garmin says this about the regular "City Navigator North America NT" on their website
"Note: You cannot use this product to update the maps on your preloaded Garmin device. To order updated map data for your preloaded Garmin device, visit the Map Updates page."
So before you buy the New Maps from a outside source you had better check to see just what you are getting!!

Here is the link about th update http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynavnt.jsp .I sure thought if you done a new install it would just overwrite the old map file.

I'm not sure how much
I'm not sure how much internal memory the Nuvi 250W has; I think it's 1.5Gig. But you can delete some voice files and pictures to free up some memory. You can also try to backup the gmapprom.img from the Nuvi and then erase it.
Are you updating the map through the automated installer or Mapsource? If your using Mapsource you can unselect Canada maps.

SCHUPAUL,
I would call Garmin tech support and see if the can help

Overwrite the old
Installing the NON update version is the same as just adding more maps to your Nuvi. Therefore you would need more space because the CNNA NT 2009 is probably too big.
If you did delete enough extra stuff on the NUVI memory drive you then would have both the 2008 and 2009 loaded and you would have to pick between them,on the "Map Info" Screen.
It would show up as a SUPP Map File

Help Installing CN 2009
Looks like I just screwed myself. I got the whole thing.
No, Not at all.
If you have a "Full Install" DVD WITH an unlock code, then you "should" be able to delete the maps on your GPS and then do a "new" install as if you never had any maps on it at all.
The only thing I can say is that if you do, in fact, have a full install DVD, you paid about $30 more for it rather than an "update" DVD.
If you have not used the unlock code, maybe the vendor will exchange it out for you, but I doubt it very much since it has been opened.

I deleted the large file as
I deleted the large file as suggested earlier and it worked. I now have the 2009 NT on.

If you loaded the new maps with MapSource, you should find a file named gmapsupp.img which is the file name Garmin uses for supplemental maps. It should be large like the other file was. It's advisable to rename this file gmapprom.img (which is the file name Garmin uses for preloaded maps) so that it doesn't get overwritten should you send additional maps to the unit.
Confused.....
I have a GPSMAP 76CSx hand held. I installed the 2009 update on my computer and sent a new map set to my device. So far, so good.
I'm probably buying the Nuvi 760 and it will most likely come with the 2008 maps. How do I go about updating the maps on the Nuvi 760?
If I get the free update from Garmin will it cause issues with the already updated maps on my computer? Can I use the already nstalled update to upate the Nuvi? Is the Nuvi update an entirely different thing that has its own installer and won't be an issue?
Help!
(Ok, Motorcycle Mama. I've seen you here and in the geocaching forums. I'm hoping you will offer some of your excellent insight and advice here.....)

Hey, thrak.
If you purchase a new GPS unit now and if it comes with the old maps, you will be eligible for a free update. This will mostly likely show up on your my.Garmin.com site. (Wait until after May 1.) If it doesn't show up there, just call Garmin.
You can't use what you've already installed because you will need another unlock code which the other update will come with.
Even though it's technically the same update, you will need to re-run the updater with the nuvi attached to the computer as it will detect, validate, and overwrite the pre-loaded maps on the nuvi.
Since your MapSource is already updated, you won't have to do that part and the updater won't interfere with what you've already done.
As you are no doubt aware (even though you are new to the auto GPS world), you won't need to send the City Navigator maps from MapSource to the unit. Once the update to the maps is done on the nuvi, you will be all set. You can, however, use MapSource to send Topo maps if you have them and if you so desire.
Then you will be able to plan routes and load them to the units which will have the same maps as MapSource.
Thanks!
Ahhhhhhhhhh......... just as I had hoped. Many thanks for the clarification.
I think I'll go ahead and take the plunge and probably buy the 760 today. My wife never wanted to learn to use the 76CSx but I think she'll be happy to use the Nuvi 760.
